A few weeks ago those in the know would have told you Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” had a tough road ahead of it. It had unknown characters, an unproven lead actor, a director best known for films that are kind of out there, and was opening in an already dreary summer as far as box office goes. A Marvel film without super heroes? Who would go see it?
Turns out, just about everyone. Early estimates for the weekend show James Gunn’s space opera ringing in $94 million in space credits. That’s a new record for August openings. That’s freakin’ fantastic. The Global Box Office is now over $160 Million already. Not too shabby.Read More »Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Reboots Summer Box Office With $94 Million Take
On Saturday, Marvel showed first footage of their upcoming blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron as the crowning piece of their SDCC’14 presentations. But their reveals weren’t just happening in the panels. Marvel also unveiled several props from the movie at their booth.
The first to be revealed was the Harley Davidson that Black Widow rides in the film, complete with Cap’s shield on the front:
I’ll start this review with an admission that I wasn’t totally won over by last year’s “Planes,” so I was expecting more of the same. I had the opportunity to see “Planes: Fire & Rescue” last month during a Disney Parks Blog event, and was pleasantly surprised to find I enjoyed it quite a bit.
In this sequel, Dusty decides to help out Radiator Springs by becoming an aerial firefighter and is sent to Piston Peak National Park to train. There he meets up with veteran fire and rescue helicopter Blade Ranger and his courageous team, including feisty super scooper Dipper, Native American helicopter Windlifter, ex-military transport Cabbie and a group of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers.
Fighting forest fires isn’t easy, and when a huge blaze breaks out in the park, threatening a group of vacationers, Dusty learns what it really takes to be a hero. There are also lessons thrown in for the youngsters about loyalty and respect.

Disney and Marvel have released three new character posters and a featurette for what could be the surprise hit of the summer “Guardians of the Galaxy. On Facebook, Guardians of the Galaxy editor Fred Raskin recently argued for why you should go out of your way to see the film in IMAX 3D:
“Yesterday I watched the IMAX 3D version of Guardians of the Galaxy, and I can say without question that this is the ideal format in which the movie should be experienced. This is not some hastily-done 3D pass in which they’ve simply added a little depth to the 2D version of the movie. Many of the shots and sequences in the film were designed for 3D (read: this will not be subtle), and I was absolutely floored by how well our 3D team pulled them off. Additionally, in IMAX, there are a number of sequences in which we’ve removed the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen so that the image fills the frame, creating a fully-immersive 3D experience.”
Having seen the 17 minute preview in IMAX 3D, I have to agree. I’m seeing the full film in faux-IMAX 3D. I’ll let you know if it comes a close or distant second.
