Celebrate 50th Anniversary of “it’s a small world”

IT'S A SMALL WORLD AT THE 1964 WORLD'S FAIR 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Fans, cast members, celebrities and more will unite in song around the globe to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “it’s a small world,” one of the most iconic Disney attractions ever built. The first version of “it’s a small world,” opened as a tribute to peace and hope at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

On Thursday, April 10, 2014, hundreds of voices from Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan, Disneyland Paris in France, and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort will sing the unforgettable theme song of the “happiest cruise that ever sailed the seven seas.” Fans from around the world can join the festivities in a first-of-its-kind, online global sing-along at SmallWorld50.com.

While on the website, fans may record videos of themselves singing the classic song and create virtual “it’s a small world” dolls to benefit UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund). UNICEF provides health care and immunizations, clean water and sanitation, nutrition, education, emergency relief and more to children around the world.

“‘it’s a small world’ has inspired hundreds of millions of people through its timeless theme,” said Tom Staggs, chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “Every moment of every day there are Disney guests enjoying ‘it’s a small world’ somewhere around the globe. The 50th anniversary of this attraction represents a celebration of the shared optimism, hope, and humanity of people throughout the world.”

Disney has also released this short video highlighting some of the history of the attraction:

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Removes More Walls As Work Continues

01-seven-dwarfs-mine-train-cover

The final phases of work on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are rapidly approaching. Disney just removed even more walls from around the left side of Snow White’s Mountain revealing more of the track and theme details. It’s amazing how close the cars will pass in front of guests. There should be some great photo opportunities.

Still no official soft opening date, but the grand opening ribbon cutting for press will be on May 2! So expect it to be open to the public shortly before or after that date. If you can’t watch the video above, I have over a dozen photos from my walking tour around the mountain below the jump:

Tina Fey meets Muppet CoStar at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Saturday Night Live alum Tina Fey has a co-star role in Muppets Most Wanted. it makes perfect sense that she would visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios and meet with one of her co-stars – Sweetums. Look ma its synergy!

The thrill of seeing a live Muppet performance

Miss_Piggy_Toronto_press_conferenceYesterday I had the chance to experience what might be called a childhood dream: seeing a Muppet live. Miss Piggy was in Toronto to promote Muppets Most Wanted and Disney graciously invited me to the press conference at the posh Shangri-La hotel (a fitting venue for a superstar like Piggy, who let everyone know that she “fixed” some of Celine Dion’s high notes in the film).

Running only ten minutes, it was far too short, but the event reminded me why a live Muppet musical like the one Disney has been exploring is such a superb idea.

It’s true what they say, even adults tend to forget that there’s a puppeteer under the table. (My only gripe was that they had Miss Piggy emerge from below, instead of having her already seated when everyone was let into the room.) You know that feeling when you see a celebrity in person after years of seeing them in pictures? I got that.
