Disney Cruise Line adds Alaska with expansion

The Disney Cruise Line has a problem. They have a lot of loyal repeat customers, but their offerings are thin when it comes to different ports of call. This will be solved in 2011 when the Disney Dream arrives in Florida to bring the fleet up to three ships. That will free Disney to move one ship, the Disney Wonder, to the west coast, and the other, the Disney Magic, to Europe.

The Wonder’s visit to Alaska is a first for Disney and the ship will require a few upgrades to handle the different weather. But it will also offer some expansive views and new excursions to explore. I predict this will be quite popular.

The Mediterranean itineraries the Disney Cruise line did during their previous trip to Europe were also a big hit. It should be even better now that they have some experience under their belt.

Disney Wonder Cruise Ship Rescues Passenger and it’s Twittered

It was high drama on the high seas last night as the Disney Wonder rescued a guest who fell off the Carnival Cruise Line ship the Sensation. At the completion of its trip, the Carnival Sensation was heading into Port Canaveral when the man fell off the ship somehow. He treaded water for about an hour until the Disney Wonder, also heading into the port, found and rescued him. His condition is reported to be okay.

How do we know this? A Disney Wonder guest twittered the whole thing. I’ve included a jpg of the tweets below from user BigHeadDennis.

I wonder if this is the first time a rescue like this has been twittered.

Transcript is below the jump:

2009 EPCOT Food & Wine Festival Preview

The Food & Wine Festival returns to EPCOT this year September 25 – November 8 for the 14th time. As with last year the even is slightly downsized from the height of 30+ countries, but the flavor and experience is all there. During the six-week event, park guests can taste fine cuisine and wines from top “foodie” cities of the world and enjoy entertainment from musical acts that will bring back memories of yesteryear.

Festival guests can enjoy the flavors of more than 25 international marketplaces dotting the World Showcase promenade highlighting tastes from cities on six continents, including Bologna, Italy; Bangkok, Thailand; Wellington, New Zealand; Santiago, Chile; Marrakesh, Morocco; Shanghai, China; and, from the United States – New Orleans. Tapas-sized portions of regional specialties run $2 to $7 each, and recommended wines and beers make perfect pairings at each kiosk. Puglia, Italy, returns as a sponsor this year, presenting culinary demonstrations with regional chefs and showcasing Adventures of Pasta and Olive Oils.

I personally hope that this year’s festival will include more of a street food element. It is a trend in food service right now, and it works well with the ‘foodie’ cities theme they have this year. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Disney Cruise Lines Making room for more Magic at Castaway Cay

The Disney Cruise Line has released more details of the upcoming expansion to their private island Castaway Cay. Located in the tropical waters of the Bahamas, Castaway Cay is a popular stop on the itinerary. When the new larger ships start operating in 2011, it will have to handle approximately 2000 more guests with each visit. As such Disney will be adding new beaches, expanding existing ones; expanding existing facilities; adding restaurants, and even new water play areas. Plus they will expand the island’s tram network to help spread guests out around the 1000 acre facility.
