Castle 4.15 Recap – Pandora

Amazing, isn’t it, how during February sweeps Castle and Beckett manage to find themselves in a case that puts the balance of New York if not the entire world on the line and requires two episodes to complete. It’s now the third year in a row that this has happened. So shall we strap in for part one of the wild ride?

The episode opens with Castle learning that Alexis has taken on a third internship, but no one will tell him what it is. Immediately, bells went off in my head screaming “It has something to do with police work.”

We head out to the murder scene where the victim was shot and stabbed with a knife and pencil before being thrown out the window. As Castle quips, “Talk about overkill.” And it’s at the crime scene that Castle learns Alexis is interning with Lanie. While he puts a good face on it, he’s not happy because he likes to keep his police work separate from his family life. Alexis is loving it and Lanie seems to be enjoying having her there as well.

The River: Season 1, Episode 1 – Magus

Editor’s Note: Please welcome Melissa Sue Sorrells Galley who will be reviewing ABC’s thrilling new drama The River.

The River is a found-footage style genre mashup of science fiction, horror, drama and suspense, and its first hour is just as complicated as that description sounds. It moves quickly—too quickly. But here are the basics:

Beloved television personality and explorer Dr. Emmet Cole and his cameraman went missing six months ago, and even though the official search party has broken up, his wife and friends refuse to give up the search. They head to the Amazon, track down Cole’s insanely tricked-out boat and find the panic room welded shut.

Believing Cole to be locked inside, they open the panic room, only to be greeted by … well, we’re not sure what. But it moves fast, and it seems pissed off. You can tell because it totally starts destroying everything and generally making spooky noises. Oh, and it kills someone. That’s a big clue.

When the explorer’s family and friends are finally able to regroup, they manage to trick the bad thing into a bad thing lock box so that they can get back down to the business of trying to find Dr. Cole. And we can move on to episode two.

But before we do that, let’s meet the cast:

Castle 4-14 Recap: The Blue Butterfly

When I first heard that Castle was going to do a tribute to film noir episode, I was a little worried about how it would turn out. Two mysteries from two different time periods don’t always work.

I shouldn’t have worried.

While not my favorite episode of the season, it was a blast from start to finish.Read More »Castle 4-14 Recap: The Blue Butterfly

Castle 4-13 Recap: An Embarrassment of B!tches

I have long been a fan of mysteries, although I tend to avoid the big franchise mystery shows. Instead, I’ve gotten hooked on Castle, the quirkly little show that is part procedural and part comedy. Yes, that’s right, a comedy mystery.

If you aren’t familiar with the premise, Richard Castle, as played by Nathan Fillion, is a best selling mystery author. He has teamed up with NYPD homicide inspector Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) to solve crimes. Officially, he’s there because he is basing his new series of novels on Beckett. Unofficially, there is unresolved sexual tension, and they are coming closer to admitting that, at least to themselves. Hey, it’s season four after all.

Castle and Beckett have fun trading barbs and banter as they solve the case, and the cases are often outlandish, making this sometimes more funny than mystery. Other weeks get very serious, especially if we are dealing with the still unsolved murder of Beckett’s mom.

If you aren’t familiar with the show, I highly recommend you head back and catch up starting with season one. It’s a hoot, and you’ll love it.

This week was certainly on the lighter side as we deal with the murder of a dog show judge who was strangled with a leash after a competition. And the prime suspect appears to be Kay Cappuccio, a reality show star who is famous because she is famous.

Warning, I do spoil the ending after the jump.Read More »Castle 4-13 Recap: An Embarrassment of B!tches

Life On Mars – Episode 2 – Review

Sorry this is a bit late this week. There’s no Play-by-Play recap of ABC’s Life On Mars this week. Instead I’ll just give you the gist of the show and the surprises we encounter.

Sam Tyler is trying to figure out what exactly happened to him. It’s a lot to consider, but he knows one thing. He’s good at catching bad guys, so why not do that. Good thing or we’d have no show to watch.

The case of the night involves armed robbery. They catch a guy who can’t swim at the pool and need to find some evidence to connect him to the crime. Gene Hunt votes to just plant the evidence, but Tyler wants to do it the 21st century way.
