Disney Kingdoms Comics: Seekers of the Weird

seekers-weird-1

We’ve seen how Disney has been incorporating Marvel into their world, whether it’s in the theme parks and cruise ships or teaming up with Phineas and Ferb to save the world, but now it’s time to see how Marvel incorporates Disney into their world.

The Disney Kingdoms brand of comics launched this week with Seekers of the Kingdom #1. The first issue sets the stage as siblings, Max and Melody Keeps discover that there is more to their family than their parents have been letting on, including their adventurous Uncle Roland and a secret entrance to a strange place called the Museum of the Weird.

“Museum of the Weird” sound familiar? It’s the name of a walk through attraction that Walt wanted to build in connection with the haunted mansion and it was based on ideas by Rolly Crump.

This first issue, while full of action and weirdness, serves to set up the rest of the story, introducing us to the heroes and villains as well as something called a Coffin Clock, which the resident baddies wants to get their hands on.Read More »Disney Kingdoms Comics: Seekers of the Weird

LucasFilm to Move Star Wars Comics From Dark Horse to Marvel in 2015

starwars-marvel-comics

In a move that isn’t quite unexpected, LucasFilm will be moving its Star Wars comic and graphic novel publishing from Dark Horse to Marvel, starting in 2015. Marvel originally published Star Wars comics for nine years, starting in March 1977 with Star Wars #1, which went on to sell more than 1 million copies.

Dark Horse took over the license in 1991, publishing fan favorite titles like Dark Empire and Star Wars: Legacy. They also released The Star Wars #1 last year, which was an adaptation of George Lucas’ original rough-draft screenplay for the film.

LucasFilm, Marvel and Dark Horse announced the transfer in their own press releases.

From LucasFilm:

“Dark Horse Comics published exceptional Star Wars comics for over 20 years, and we will always be grateful for their enormous contributions to the mythos, and the terrific partnership that we had,” said Carol Roeder, director of Lucasfilm franchise publishing, Disney Publishing Worldwide. “In 2015, the cosmic adventures of Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewbacca will make the lightspeed jump back to Marvel, to begin a new age of adventures within the Star Wars universe.”

From Marvel:

“We here at Marvel could not be more excited to continue the publication of Star Wars comic books and graphic novels,” said Marvel Worldwide Publisher and President, Dan Buckley. “The perennial brand of Star Wars is one of the most iconic in entertainment history and we are honored to have the opportunity to bring our creative talent pool to continue, and expand Star Wars into galaxies far, far away.”

Dark Horse, however, had a more melancholy look at the change:Read More »LucasFilm to Move Star Wars Comics From Dark Horse to Marvel in 2015

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 12 preview – Seeds

agents-of-shield-ep12-lola

Previously on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC:

We were reunited with the team just a few days after Coulson’s capture as they were in pursuit of a guy named Vanchat, who they hoped could help find their leader. After returning to the bus with Vanchat, Agent Hand promptly kicked Skye off and Skye promptly followed her own leads to search for Coulson.

I really liked Skye’s story in this episode. She proved her intelligence and her use to the team. And I definitely got a good chuckle from her impersonation of May. She brought some much needed levity to an otherwise dark episode.

Meanwhile, the mystery surrounding Coulson’s death is unraveling. What I really wanted to know was whether or not this Coulson is the same one that we’d gotten to know in the movies. The episode didn’t answer all of the questions about his resurrection, but it did answer that one.

This isn’t a clone and this isn’t a Life Model Decoy. This is Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. who underwent multiple procedures that were both very risky and very shady.

My next question is the same as Agent Hand’s — Why is Coulson worth all the trouble to bring him back to life? Does Fury just like him that much or is there something deeper?

The last revelation of the episode is that Mike has survived the explosion but our unknown antagonist has replaced one of his eyes with the eye camera/bomb that we’ve seen already.

That’s a lot to build on and I look forward to seeing what happens.

Now on to tonight’s show:Read More »Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 12 preview – Seeds

Pre-order Thor: The Dark World on DVD, Blu-Ray, and 3D

Thor The Dark World 3D Combo Box Art

Get ready to marvel at the power of Asgard’s favorite son. Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World arrives on 3D Combo Pack, Single-Disc Blu-ray, and DVD on February 25th and will be available on Digital 3D and Digital HD on February 4th! Bonus features include an exclusive first look at Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, never-before-seen extended and deleted scenes and more!

Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World continues the big screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos… but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

The further adventures of Thor was a great film. It picked up where The Avengers left off with Thor and his buddies doing a little cleanup around the 9 worlds and ended with a fantastic battle that showed Thor’s earthly companions can hold their own, at least when it comes to technological solutions. Of course, the whole movie was stolen by Loki (in more ways than one) and I can’t wait to see more of the two brothers from Asgard battling wits versus brawn in future films. Someone make that happen. In the meantime, definitely add this movie to your shelf.

If you’ve seen Thor:TDW, there are two credit scenes. The first one is a mid-credits scene that serves as a lead-in to Marvel’s upcoming feature film, Guardians of the Galaxy (due in theaters August 1, 2014).

Sif and Volstagg meet with The Collector to give him the Aether. Surrounding the exchange are glass boxes with various aliens and other collectibles. One of these glass boxes contains a huge cocoon.
