Disney rolls out first trailer for Marvel’s Big Hero 6

BIG HERO 6

We’ve been teased, we’ve been smothered in cute, and we’ve been introduced to the main characters of the movie, now it’s time for Disney marketing to let loose the hounds and really start promoting their next animated feature “Big Hero 6,” which is inspired by a Marvel Comic of the same name.

Released today is the first big trailer for the movie. In it, we get our first look at the movie’s villain – Yokai and a hint of the action that brings the friends together to try and save the day. Plus more Baymax, who is on pace to steal the show with cuteness.

I like that the movie doesn’t have that comic book style, nor does it really have a style that resembles any previous Disney animated feature. It’s kind of a cross between Miyazaki, Chris Sanders (Lilo and Stitch) with a small dose of Pixar thrown in (especially on the secondary characters).

We also have our first easter egg. Look on the back wall behind the police officer right around minute 1:15 in the trailer for a glimpse of a familiar face. Can’t see it? The answer is below the jump

New Extended Trailer from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

GOTG_Payoff_1-Sht

If you weren’t able to make it out to the 17 minute IMAX preview of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, you really missed out. Consider yourself lucky that you won’t have to wait until August 1st to see some of the footage from that special event. Marvel and Disney have released the new trailer that has a ton of new footage from the film. It’s the same preview we saw at the end of the 17 minutes.

Get your tickets from Fandango, enter the Guardians of the Galaxy sweepstakes, and help support The Disney Blog.

This makes it a lot clearer that GotG is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,. which I think will help attract a lot of Marvel Avenger fans who just want to see what’s up.

17-minute preview of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, My Report

Marvel comic book geeks all across America are united in crying out just one word today – More! Please give us more of the fantastic film that is “Guardians of the Galaxy.” A 17-minute preview was shown on IMAX (and the smaller IMAX-lite) screens across the country today.

I’ve watched the previews and read the movie screening materials, but other than that I am not that familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy story or characters, so I went into today’s 17-minute IMAX special preview with a near blank slate.

The special extended scene we saw focused on a jail break scene. It’s not right from the beginning of the film, but apparently it’s not too far into it either. But it’s the perfect scene as it introduces the audience to all of guardians, their capabilities and personalities, as well shows how they work together as a team. Which is, in short, amazing.

The 3D IMAX version we saw was very immersive. The director took advantage of how deep the space was to really move objects through it, so when you’re watching in 3D, you get that added perspective of depth, and it makes the film that much more realistic (even as you watch the somewhat cartoony violence).

I was worried that audiences who aren’t familiar with Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket, Groot or Drax won’t warm to the film, but trust me, if you don’t like the characters by this point in the film, the prison escape sequence will seal the deal. The rapport and interplay is witty, well written, superbly acted (especially considering the digital animation that went into two of the characters) and just enough outside the stereotype you expect for the characters to be interesting.

I definitely recommend catching “Guardians of the Galaxy” this August 1st when it opens at a theatre near you. Watch it in 3D on the largest clearest screen you can find withing reasonable driving distance.

If you missed the 7/7 at 7pm IMAX screening you can still catch a separate sequence at Disneyland or Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

A new featurette and the latest previews are below the jump too:

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Director posts to Facebook as production wraps

guardians-of-the-galaxy-international

You can’t blame Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn for being a little wistful as his first big Hollywood studio film wrapped up. As the project consumed the last two years of his life, this is what he had to say on Facebook:

I swear, I’ve gotten angry with filmmakers like Ridley Scott and George Lucas who can’t let go of their old films and want to keep going back and offering up different versions, but I can easily see myself doing that now.

There isn’t much left. I’m still playing with the sound mix and the 3D and the DI (digital intermediate – basically the color-timing) – and there are some outstanding visual effects shots. But I still want to do what I can with what I have left to make the most stunning film I can for you guys on August 1! I think the Marvel producers are starting to understand my almost psychotic inability to be happy with anything, and to pick apart things to the very bitter end. They’re going to have to tear this movie from my bloody grip.

Gunn also writes, that he gets “teary-eyed when I think of how I won’t be working with Rocket, at least for a little while.” Does this mean we should bexpect a Guardians 2 announcement sometime soon? Perhaps even at Comic-con?

Like Marvel’s other recent releases, I think Disney expects Guardians to have a significant overseas play. That International poster is interesting for the fact that none of the characters have weapons in their hands unlike the domestic poster. Guess they figure violence does not play well overseas?

For now, we wait until August 1st for the official opening to find out if this film can win over audiences.
