The River: Season 1, Episode 5 – Peaches

This week’s episode begins on day 22 of the search for Dr. Emmett Cole. It’s something of an anomaly because it begins with some foggy footage aboard the Magus instead of with the flashback we’ve become accustomed to.

As the team sails on toward The Source (or Jonas’ best guess of where it is), Tess has everyone on “visibility” duty to fight the fog. Jonas, who recently spent months hanging from a tree by his neck, thinks that returning to his breezy perch might be preferential to holding a flash light and keeping watch for obstacles on the water. It’s an odd tone for the character to take, and it feels completely unrealistic. Where’s the PTSD, the crippling fear, the inability to sleep?

During the night, with Tess at the helm and the rest of the crew watching the water, they see another ship approaching them. The team honks the boat’s horn, lights flares, waves their arms … and are eventually forced to run the Magus aground to avoid a collision. Except, of course, when the creaking stops and everyone is back on their feet, the other ship has disappeared. Ghost ship!!

Revenge 1.15: Chaos

I don’t know about you but I’m still reeling Wednesday’s episode of Revenge. It had a lot to live up to. We’ve been subjected to 15 episodes of flashbacks (and flashbacks in those) just to be brought back to the Fire & Ice engagement party. The party where viewers were led to believe that Daniel Grayson would not survive his engagement shindig… literally. Could the writers be that cruel? Especially after we have grown to care about Daniel and realize our initial impression of him as the party animal/evil spawn of Grayson was completely wrong?

Well, after much speculation, and in the final minutes of this long-awaited conclusion, we can breathe a sigh of relief as we see that psycho Tyler is the one with the fatal gunshot wounds.

You would think Revenge’s entire story would make a bit more sense after this reveal, but, no, of course not. Instead, we are left with more questions than answers. Again.

So how did we get to this place?

The River: Season 1, Episode 3 – Los Ciegos

Starting off with another flashback to 2002, the team is working on a show about sharks, specifically focusing on their penchant for eating each other. What a great topic to explore on a family show about the wild!

From there, we head into the present. The show has clearly slipped into a format: this episode once again begins with the team crowded around a table, using clues from Dr. Cole’s video tapes to determine where they should look for him next. This time, they’ve picked a cave somewhere in the mountainous region of the Amazon.

As they prepare for their trek “at least a day’s hike back into the jungle into hostile territory,” as Lincoln tells us, the show uses the documentary style to ask the questions we’ve all been wondering about: why haven’t these people run screaming from this expedition. Their answers don’t provide much insight.

Revenge 1.14: Perception

Ahhh. The engagement period. Otherwise known as “the happiest time of your life.” On the surface, Emily and Daniel might seem happy. Happy enough to give in to Victoria’s whims: a “fire & ice” themed engagement party (who thought that was a good idea?) and the posed family (?) engagement shots in the Grayson mansion. The ones where they are all wearing white. (Eh.) Emily has to be distracted with bigger matters if she is letting this atrocities occur.

In all honesty, this episode remained pretty sluggish through most of the hour until the last ten minutes when the you-know-what hit the fan. But before we get there… Emily is very focused on Charlotte finding out about who her father is. Without caring that Charlotte might feel like she was kicked in the gut, or on the verge of a massive identity crisis. Nolan tries to explain this to Emily, make her understand the possible consequences of what she is about to do. But no dice. Emily is in her zone.

The River: Season 1, Episode 1 – Magus

Editor’s Note: Please welcome Melissa Sue Sorrells Galley who will be reviewing ABC’s thrilling new drama The River.

The River is a found-footage style genre mashup of science fiction, horror, drama and suspense, and its first hour is just as complicated as that description sounds. It moves quickly—too quickly. But here are the basics:

Beloved television personality and explorer Dr. Emmet Cole and his cameraman went missing six months ago, and even though the official search party has broken up, his wife and friends refuse to give up the search. They head to the Amazon, track down Cole’s insanely tricked-out boat and find the panic room welded shut.

Believing Cole to be locked inside, they open the panic room, only to be greeted by … well, we’re not sure what. But it moves fast, and it seems pissed off. You can tell because it totally starts destroying everything and generally making spooky noises. Oh, and it kills someone. That’s a big clue.

When the explorer’s family and friends are finally able to regroup, they manage to trick the bad thing into a bad thing lock box so that they can get back down to the business of trying to find Dr. Cole. And we can move on to episode two.

MouseSurplus to be featured on Hit A&E Series “Shipping Wars”

Disney theme park fans know one word when it comes to finding a piece of theme park history to take home with them. That word is MouseSurplus. With a new location in Kissimmee, MouseSurplus is full of costumes, props, signs, and attraction vehicles that will make the Disney fans heart skip a few beats.

Now they get to share that passion with the audience of A&E series “Shipping Wars” on a episode airing February 7, 2012 at 9pm ET. The show will feature a a move of a Star Wars AT-AT Walker and and X-Wing Fighter from MouseSurplus along 192 in Kissimmee all the way to Orem, Utah.

The props were originally part of the F.A.O. Schwartz store in Las Vegas that closed in 2004. I remember them fondly.
