MLB Atlanta Braves Return to ESPN WWOS Complex for Spring Training

The Atlanta Braves head to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for two weeks of training in mid-February, with pitchers and catchers reporting on Sunday, Feb. 19 and the first full-squad workout on Feb. 25. The team kicks off its spring training schedule March 3 against the Detroit Tigers, who return to Disney for a second matchup on March 31.

This will mark the 15th consecutive year the Braves have held their Spring Training at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Their first game was held as the Grand Opening event as they took on the Cincinnati Reds on March 3, 1997 in front of a sold out crowd.

The reigning World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees are headline some of Major League Baseball’s marquee teams slated to take on the Braves at Disney.

Disney World bringing back Tower of Terror Race in 2012

Disney’s popular runDisney division has some big news… a return of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror event. It features a new 10-mile race that will echo the original Tower of Terror 13K race held in 2009. The new race debuts Sept. 29, 2012 and is the sixth signature runDisney event and the second nighttime race at Walt Disney World. In order to make room for this event, the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend will shift to early November.

Reviving the scarily popular Twilight Zone Tower of Terror theme, runDisney unveiled its newest race today, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend, which debuts next year at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando. As with all runDisney events, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror race weekend will involve a variety of events, including a 5K and Kids’ races, plus a Health and Fitness Expo, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney.

Watching this footage from the 2009 Tower of Terror 13K race, I hope they’re able to capture what everyone says was a great atmosphere throughout the park.

Annika Sorenstam Tees Up Students for Success at Walt Disney World

Earlier this week, Fifty high-school students from The First Tee had some help getting their head in the game at the fifth annual Future Leaders Forum sponsored by The Toro Company and Walt Disney World Resort. The three-day event was designed to help students broaden leadership skills, prepare for college, and explore career disciplines within the golf industry.

Learning how lessons from the game of golf have real-life applications, participants gained insights from World Golf Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam and other industry leaders. Sorenstam, also the spokesperson for The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits, led participants in an interactive session highlighting the importance of incorporating healthy choices into all areas of their lives. The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits is a collaborative effort among The First Tee, ANNIKA Foundation and Florida Hospital for Children to promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people.

RIP Dan Wheldon, Indianapolis 500 Champion

Besides Disney my other real fandom is that of racing, particularly open wheel racing. So as I posted early this year, I was very pleased when this year’s Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was feted at Walt Disney World with a victory parade.

It was with tremendous sadness that I learned today of Wheldon’s death in an accident at the Las Vegas race. Wheldon celebrated his 33rd birthday with his family when he visited Walt Disney World in June. Here’s a video from that day that so clearly shows his love of his family, of life, and of racing.

The 2005 IndyCar series champion, Wheldon was a class act all they way. There’s really nothing more to say than too soon, too soon. Our thoughts are with the Wheldon family and all the drivers and members of the IndyCar racing team and league.

Update: Today’s race was called after officials learned of Wheldon’s death. Instead the remaining teams and drivers held five parade laps in tribute to Wheldon. The video of this moving ceremony is below the jump:
