Dancing With The Stars: Week 2 Performances

Editor: please welcome Rob Shahan who will form the other half of our Dancing With the Stars recap duo.

Hi there everyone and thanks for dropping by this week’s Dancing with the Stars Blog! This week’s episode was entertaining and upbeat as each dancer had their choice of jammin’ to either the Jive or the Quickstep.

First off though, a little background on yours truly.  I am a huge TV fan but am lacking in the dance knowledge department.  Sure, I can groove on the dance floor (after some liquid courage) but I will leave the dance technique judging to the experts.  I will bring a light hearted and fun perspective to the blog as well as my witty humor.

Hope Solo (no relation to Han) and her dance partner Maks Chmerkovskiy were up first. Earlier this year she wowed a worldwide audience as her USA Women’s Soccer Team finished second to Japan in the World Cup and now she is trying to kick (pun intended) that athletic prowess over to the dance floor. Dressed in a soccer jersey (including high-heel  Converses – is Converse the official athletic footwear of DWTS?) and dancing the Jive, she gave us a sexy shimmy at the beginning of the dance and had fun throughout. The judges said she lost some of her kicks and flicks (note to self, I need to look up the definition of “flick”), she could use a little more rehearsal and relax a little more.  No one on the show is more athletic than Hope (and she cleans up very, very well).  The judges moved their critical opinion to the scoreboard and gave her an overall score of 19.  p.s. Judge Bruno later said flicks come from the knee – I am learning!

Kristin Cavallari and I have a history.  Earlier this year I sent her and her then-finance Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler a wedding gift. Sure it was the least expensive item on their registry but I thought a thank you note from them would be a unique memento to have in my sports room.  They received the gift and were kind enough to send me a thank you card!

Dancing With The Stars Fall 2011 Cast Announced

With the two-hour season premiere set for Monday, Sept 19 at 8pm ET on ABC, we’re finally getting our first look at the lineup of stars who will take to the dance floor. While I haven’t been the show’s biggest fan, I do see at least one name on the list I’m interested in following. Which is yours?

Cast: Ron Artest, David Arquette, J.R. Martines, Rob Kardashian, Chaz Bono, Ricki Lake, Kristin Cavallari, Chynna Phillips, Nancy Grace, Hope Solo, Elisabetta Canalis, and Carson Kressley.

“Dancing with the Stars” returns with the promise of new surprises, plus all the elements viewers have come to know and love. “Macy’s Stars of Dance,” which features some of the best choreographers and performers from different styles of dance and offers viewers performances that represent the peak of achievement in their genres, will return on “Dancing with the Stars the Results Show.” One of the “Macy’s Stars of Dance” performances will be the popular “Design-a-Dance,” where fans have the chance to select their favorite professional dancers, dance styles, songs and costumes at www.abc.com. New this season will be “AT&T’s Spotlight Performance,” which features and celebrates people whose lives have been changed forever by dance.

Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition – Premieres May 30th on ABC

I really enjoyed watching the first three seasons of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Those seasons often combined some personal growth with the award of a new home. What many people forget is that the Extreme Makeover series started as a body sculpture show where scalpels were used instead of hammers and the award was a new body from plastic surgery. Now the series is returning to that theme with a new show Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition (EM:WLE).

This time instead of relying on the scalpel, there is a personal trainer, and a lifestyle transformation instead of a home transformation. The May 30th premiere of the new ABC show will feature Rachel, a young woman, taking on a challenge to lose over 200 pounds. Each show of the 8 episode season is a self-contained, non-competitive year long journey.

Her guide for the journey is transformation specialist Chris Powell. He breaks the transformation process down into four 90 day segments. The first quarter features a crash course on healthy eating, exercise, and inspiration to lose all that weight. After that the subject is on their own except for the occasional check-in. This format may change in future episodes.

If you’re a fan of biggest loser, but not of the sometimes cut-throat competition on the show, then EM:WLE is for you. It’s definitely different from what I’ve seen from other reality shows. But if you’re looking to be inspired about how anyone can overcome obstacles in their lives, this show is for you.

“Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition” premieres MONDAY, MAY 30 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
