Marvel Studios had decided to go bold by setting dates for its upcoming movies through Spring 2019, which will take them into the start of Phase 4 of the Marvel Universe.
Already on the schedule for upcoming films are Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014, along with The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, and Ant-Man on July 17, 2015.
For 2016, Marvel plans to release Captain America 3. This leaves 1 more movie for 2016, 3 movies for 2017, 2 movies for 2018, and 1 for 2019 (though I’m sure a second will be scheduled for later that year).
So what other films could Marvel plan to release?
Well, The Avengers sequel is coming three years after the first one, which means The Avengers 3 could occupy one of the 2018 dates. Doctor Strange already has a director, so that might get the second 2016 date. Thor 3 is also in the pipeline, so that will probably get one of the 2017 dates, as will a most likely sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel is also said to be developing standalone films around Black Widow and Black Panther. That leaves one slot unaccounted for.
Hopefully we’ll know more once Marvel has its big reveals at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Director James Gunn continues to share new photos from Guardians of the Galaxy. Above is Lee Pace, who plays Ronan, on board the Milano space craft, aka Peter Quill’s ship, set. Gunn describes the concept behind the Milano:
“The Milano, though hardly the biggest set in the film, was possibly production designer Charlie Wood’s most impressive. In person it seemed every inch a believable spacecraft. It was two levels high and inspired equally by the Apollo space program, the pulp art of Chris Foss, American muscle cars, and what we imagined was an older cousin Peter Quill idolized who had a 1980’s stoner van (some of the walls have shag carpeting). The Milano is a souped-up version of the Ravagers’ M-ships. Charlie Wood and I discussed early on that different cultures would have different cultural priorities. On Earth all of our technology is geared towards the priorities of ease and luxury. But other worlds could have other priorities – say, aesthetics or procreation. In the case of the Ravagers, what was most important was a tactile sense of control. Of course they had the technology for more automated crafts, but they wanted to be in control and totally feel the power of the engines and the gears beneath them. Touch is important. So all of their ships were designed around this one concept.”

Marvel and Disney have released the new trailer that has a ton of new footage from the film. It’s the same preview we saw at the end of the 17 minutes.

Read More »New Extended Trailer from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
Marvel comic book geeks all across America are united in crying out just one word today – More! Please give us more of the fantastic film that is “Guardians of the Galaxy.” A 17-minute preview was shown on IMAX (and the smaller IMAX-lite) screens across the country today.
I’ve watched the previews and read the movie screening materials, but other than that I am not that familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy story or characters, so I went into today’s 17-minute IMAX special preview with a near blank slate.
The special extended scene we saw focused on a jail break scene. It’s not right from the beginning of the film, but apparently it’s not too far into it either. But it’s the perfect scene as it introduces the audience to all of guardians, their capabilities and personalities, as well shows how they work together as a team. Which is, in short, amazing.
The 3D IMAX version we saw was very immersive. The director took advantage of how deep the space was to really move objects through it, so when you’re watching in 3D, you get that added perspective of depth, and it makes the film that much more realistic (even as you watch the somewhat cartoony violence).
I was worried that audiences who aren’t familiar with Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket, Groot or Drax won’t warm to the film, but trust me, if you don’t like the characters by this point in the film, the prison escape sequence will seal the deal. The rapport and interplay is witty, well written, superbly acted (especially considering the digital animation that went into two of the characters) and just enough outside the stereotype you expect for the characters to be interesting.
I definitely recommend catching “Guardians of the Galaxy” this August 1st when it opens at a theatre near you. Watch it in 3D on the largest clearest screen you can find withing reasonable driving distance.
If you missed the 7/7 at 7pm IMAX screening you can still catch a separate sequence at Disneyland or Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
