One of the big worries about translating Stephen Sondheim’s play from stage to screen was what, if any, songs would be cut. It didn’t make it through unscathed, but there was one song that was cut that wasn’t even in the original musical. There was a beautiful song that Stephen Sondheim wrote for Meryl Streep, unfortunately it slowed the film down just at the moment things were picking up. So it had to go.
The good news is they filmed it and you’ll get to see it on the “Into the Woods” Blu-Ray or, as it turns out, you can get a preview right here.
For a new song, it definitely fits into the overall tone of the movie. Pre-order your Blu-ray combo pack here and it will arrive on March 24.

The special features including an exclusive, never-before-seen original song written for the movie by Stephen Sondheim with lyrics by James Lapine. “She’ll be Back” was eventually cut from the film, but not before Meryl Streep recorded it for the movie.
In addition to Streep, the talent cast included Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine, Lika Crawford, and Daniel Huttlestone. Iconic characters, such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel, find their fates intertwined with a humble baker and his wife, whose longing to have a child sends them on a quest to reverse a witch’s (Streep) curse. Beautiful music, but no singing. I don’t know why not, there will be singing in the movie. The big-screen adaptation includes songs from the stage musical, including “Children Will Listen,” “Giants in the Sky,” “On the Steps of the Palace,” “No One Is Alone” and “Agony,” among others.
