A Short Post About the Short Film La Luna

  • by

I have reviewed a lot of movies for a lot of different media outlets, including, but not limited to, the majority of Pixar films. However, I’ve never written a whole article about a Pixar short, and it is time that changed. La Luna is the reason.

La Luna was created, written, and directed by Enrico Casarosa, who had previously worked on Cars, Up, and Ratatouille, and it was nominated for an Academy Award (Best Short Film). It deserved it.

If you have ever wondered what it is like to be nominated for an Oscar, here is how  Casarosa described it:

I woke up and  I let all my family sleep, but I made myself a coffee and I was in the dark in the kitchen, trying to figure out where they would put it because they don’t really mention us little guys in the show.  You have to go look for it.  But once you find out…I love that moment of that quiet, personal moment of me and a cup of coffee.  Then it turned into text and then it’s a mess, and  emails of all these people kind of congratulating me.

So I really felt great,  the feeling of a nomination feels wonderful, but,  the thing I remember the most is just the outpouring from all over the place, people coming through the woodwork to say hi and congratulations, which is really great, and that kind of strange quiet moment.

It was not a bad day.

I bet.

The story of La Luna runs seven minutes and does not use any spoken language, aside from shrugs, looks, and some mumbling that only the characters can understand. It’s a family thing.

The film covers the first night on the job for a little boy entering the family business with his father and grandfather. The men do not get along and the boy is forever stuck between them.

First Trailer for Wreck-It Ralph from Walt Disney Animation Studios

Disney has partnered with MSN to release the first trailer for its next animated feature – “Wreck-It Ralph”. I definitely recommend clicking the little button in the right corner and watching it in HD on full screen. There are a ton of great details hidden throughout (for instance, see if you can spot Paperman). The trailer also includes a first good luck at what the movie will be about.

Wreck-It Ralph lives in the video game world. After hours all the video game characters congregate at Grand Central Station and do things like have support groups for bad guys and meet other characters (including some from classic games like Bowser and Zangief and Q-Bert). Wreck-It Ralph decides that his role as a bad guy is no fun and he wants to be a good guy, so he decides to go visit some other games to see if he can handle the new role. That’s where the adventure begins.

Rich Moore directs and brings some of the humor and fun from his runs helming Futurama and The Simpsons. Starring voices include John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch. Wreck-It Ralph will start demolishing theaters everywhere November 2nd, 2012.

Brave Soundtrack Transports Moviegoers to Ancient Scotland

One of the reasons I’m looking forward to Pixar’s Brave is the promise of a musical soundtrack that evokes the rich tapestry of Gaelic culture. It sounds like I”m in luck. Patrick Doyle’s score promises authenticity with a fresh and contemporary approach to, as well as two original songs performed by lauded Scottish Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis. A third original song plays during the film’s epilogue and is performed by UK singing sensation Birdy with British folk rock band Mumford & Sons.

“The music of ‘Brave’ supports the story, bolstering this epic journey with Merida,” said Director Mark Andrews. “The music really sets the tone for the film and underscores the time period. We wanted to capture this ancient feel of Scotland and the music really adds another layer of authenticity.”

The “Brave” soundtrack will be available wherever music is sold on June 19, 2012 or you can pre-order it now on Amazon. The track list follows:

1. “Touch the Sky” Performed by Julie Fowlis
2. “Into the Open Air” Performed by Julie Fowlis
3. “Learn Me Right” Performed by Birdy [with Mumford & Sons]
4. “Fate and Destiny” Score
5. “The Games” Score
6. “I Am Merida” Score
7. “Remember to Smile” Score

New Mashup: Walt Disney’s Taxi Driver

I love those trailer mashups that combine a Disney world with an unexpected source. Very little could be further from the world of Disney than Taxi Driver and yet Bryan Boyce has managed to make a perfect “fair use” parody trailer combining the two. According… Read More »New Mashup: Walt Disney’s Taxi Driver
