DisneyToon Studios layoffs mark shift in animation market

DisneyToon_New_Logo

Remember the days when you raced to the Disney Store to pick up the latest VHS release and an exclusive litho? If you’re like us, you have dozens of those lithographs in boxes and a huge pile of VHS tapes tucked in a corner somewhere.

The Mouse House could make money hand over whisker those days, sometimes just by not releasing a film and putting it the vault for 5 to 7 years. Then came DVDs and things got crazy. Disney turned to classic editions, platinum editions, diamond editions, each slightly different than the previous edition and all of them finding their way to the shelves of Disney fans.

Out of that glorious money tree, came DisneyToon Studios. What started off as a way to get Disney Television Animation’s “The Return of Jafar” into the home video market became a bounty of VHS tapes, and later DVDs. Eventually DisneyToon Studios an animated theatrical film producer in its own right. It was as much a move to combat the public’s unwillingness to buy another copy of a VHS tape or DVD when they knew a new format was just around the corner (Blu-Ray, Digital, or on-demand) as it was an artistic move.

Still as DisneyToon Studios matured, quality improved and audiences were thrilled to see Tinkerbell and her adventure on the big screen. Disney even almost managed to make Planes a bonifide franchise. But not quite as the latest attempt hasn’t had half the success of the first Planes film. And face it, even the most ardent Disney fans will eventually tire of seeing Tinkerbell and her fairy friends everywhere.

And so, what is to become of DisneyToon Studios? Well it will probably fade away, at least for a while.Read More »DisneyToon Studios layoffs mark shift in animation market

Walt Disney Studios 2014 Fall Release Schedule

Update: Looks like McFarland has been pushed back to a February 20th, 2015 release date.

As mentioned earlier today, Disney is having a great year at the box office. Four more chances remain to make it an even better one. Here are the remaining films of 2014 from Walt Disney Studios.

October 10th – Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

alexander-very-bad-day

Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom (Jennifer Garner), dad (Steve Carell), brother (Dylan Minnette) and sister (Kerris Dorsey) all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn’t had one.

“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” directed by Independent Spirit Award-winner Miguel Arteta (“The Good Girl,” “Cedar Rapids,” “Youth in Revolt”) from a screenplay by Rob Lieber, is a 21 Laps Entertainment/Jim Henson Company production.

Alice in Wonderland Sequel Begins Production With All-Star Cast and Crew

mad_hatter_alice-wonderland-looking-glass

Back in 2010, “Alice in Wonderland” was a fanciful wonder on screen and at the box office for Disney pulling in more than one billion dollars. In fact, that might be considered the last time Johnny Depp had a real box office blockbuster. Depp is returning to play the Mad Hatter in “Alice In Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass.” So let’s all hope for a return to 2010 when it comes to his star power at the box office.

The sequel will revisit Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories with an all-new new tale that travels back to Underland—and back in Time. “Alice In Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass” is produced by the returning team of Joe Roth, Jennifer Todd, Suzanne Todd, and Tim Burton. John G. Scotti is the executive producer; Linda Woolverton (“Maleficent,” “Alice In Wonderland,”) penned the screenplay.

The gang, as they say, has been brought back together for the cast:

  • Johnny Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean” films, “Alice In Wonderland,”) returns to the big screen as the Mad Hatter—Hatter Tarrant Hightopp.
  • Anne Hathaway (“Les Misérables,” “Alice In Wonderland,”) portrays the White Queen—Mirana.
  • Mia Wasikowska (“Jane Eyre” and “Alice In Wonderland”) once again appears as Alice Kingsleigh, who’s on a quest to help the Mad Hatter.
  • Helena Bonham Carter ( “Les Misérables,” “Alice In Wonderland”) returns as the Red Queen—Iracebeth.
  • Rhys Ifans (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I,” “The Amazing Spider-Man”) fills the shoes of Zanik Hightopp, the Mad Hatter’s father.
  • Matt Lucas (“Alice In Wonderland”) returns to the revelry in a dual role as Tweedledee and Tweedledum.
  • Ed Speleers (TV’s “Downton Abbey,” “Eragon”) portrays James Harcourt in the film.
  • And Sacha Baron Cohen (“Hugo,” “Les Misérables”) was called on to bring Time to the big screen.

“Alice In Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass” also boasts an extraordinary voice cast:
