Disney Dream Reaches Home Port near Orlando

A couple hundred Disney cast members, a bevy of specially invited press, hundreds of members of the public, and a few rather large rodents, greeted the arrival to Florida of the newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet this morning – The Disney Dream. Port Canaveral will be the home port for the ship that has been under construction for nearly two-years in Papenburg, Germany. For the most part The Dream will sail three, four, and five night cruises to the Bahamas. The initial cruise departs January 26th and there are still even a few cabins left on the second cruise as of this morning.

With the arrival of the Disney Dream to its homeport in Florida, preparations are underway for its inaugural cruises and events, including the traditional christening of the vessel. Other Disney Dream inaugural events include a Benefit Preview Cruise in support of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, sailing Jan. 21-23. I am currently planning to be aboard one of those preview cruises and attend the christening. So look for more on that in the coming weeks.

Building The Disney Dream in 30 Seconds

Here’s a video that compresses the building process of the Disney Dream into 30 marvelous seconds. When watching that, it is hard not to hear the Benny Hill soundtrack in my head. If you’re the same way, this is for you.

Disney Dream Sails To The Sea

Disney Cruise Line just released this 1 minute video showing the highlights of the conveyance from Meyer Werft shipyards to the sea, where the Disney Dream will be undergoing engine testing and the addition of final details.

Disney Dream floats out of Meyer Werft dock

Early this morning near Papenburg, Germany, the third ship in the Disney Cruise Line stable, The Disney Dream, floated out of the dry dock of Meyer Werft in a special ceremony. I’ll miss my weekly peek at construction via the web cam, but look forward to seeing it in person when it reaches its home at Port Canaveral, FL.

USA Today’s Cruise Log was there and has the dramatic photos and here’s a video from the other side of the fireworks:
