Disney Fantasy to debut new Stage Show

The entertainment lineup for the fourth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, the Disney Fantasy, has been revealed. We learned earlier that a version of the Aladdin musical from California Adventure would come to the Disney Fantasy. Now we are told that a brand new stage show called ‘Wishes’ looks to take Disney ship board productions to new heights.

As an aside, did they have to name it ‘Wishes’? There’s already a Walt Disney World fireworks show by that name. I’m not that worried about them getting confused, but some differences in naming would be appreciated. Update: Apparently the show starts and ends with a tribute to the fireworks show. I guess that makes it a little more appropriate.

“Wishes” will be a 45-minute musical journey about three best friends who discover the secret to being a grown-up is staying connected to their inner child. Full-scale production numbers will cover the stage as the cast of “Wishes” performs original songs and classic Disney tunes with a contemporary twist.

The story begins as long-time best friends Kayla and Nicole along with Nicole’s twin brother Brandon visit Disneyland to celebrate their high school graduation. Each is unsure of what the future holds for them, so they make a wish to go on the “Ride of Our Lives” – the show’s original opening number.

Their wish evokes an enchanted world where a cavalcade of Disney characters – including Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Lilo, Stitch, Mulan, Hercules, Pinocchio, Timon and Pumbaa – materialize to guide the teens through their magical journey.

Notable moments include:

  • In an over-the-top musical comedy production number, the song “I’ve Got a Dream” from “Tangled” sets the scene as the Snuggly Duckling Tavern comes alive, with Rapunzel, Flynn Rider and a tavern full of hilarious thugs.
  • In the “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” from “Lilo and Stitch” scene, the stage fills with giant windsurfing sails, kites and surf boards. The infectious music inspires Kayla as she rides a surfboard, flying atop a giant blue wave silk.
  • King Louie and the Monkeys perform a high-energy swing band version of “I Wanna Be Like You” from the Jungle Book.

In the final act, the trio celebrates their journey at a graduation party as the pop tune “Breakthrough” from the Disney Channel original movie “Lemonade Mouth” keeps the revelry going.

The Muppets become Enchanted Art aboard the Disney Fantasy Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line just announced that The Muppets will make their debut on Disney Cruise Line in a new adventure game aboard the Disney Fantasy, the new Disney ship setting sail in March 2012. The adventure game will leverage the ship wide system of interactive art known as ‘Enchanted Art.’ Here’s a clip of three such installations filmed aboard the Disney Dream in January 2011.

Throughout the Disney Fantasy, guests will discover creative and whimsical technical innovations – whether it’s mealtime, playtime or bedtime. “Paintings” spring to life. Guests’ own drawings dance with Disney characters. Interior staterooms have a porthole view of the sea outside. Animated characters chat with guests. The floor beneath children comes alive to movements.

The Muppets will be featured in one of the ship’s adventure games. “The Case of the Stolen Show” will take guests on an interactive adventure quest around the ship, uncovering clues via more than a dozen pieces of Enchanted Art and physical “evidence.”

Remy an upscale restaurant experience on board the Disney Dream has updated its menus and released a new video with Chef Scott Hunnel showcasing one of the new items – Tomato Ratatouille. Seems an appropriate dish given the restaurants provenance.

D23 Expo Recap: Day 2

  • by

Hello, and welcome to the D23 Expo, Day 2 (for more expo coverage read my D23 Expo Day 1 and Alison’s D23 Expo Day 3 recaps!) where things were taken up a big ol’ notch. I know, I couldn’t believe it either.

This is where you say, “How in the world did they top the first day? Nothing could be sweeter than Kermit the Frog and Rowlf the Dog singing a tribute to the late, great Jim Henson! Nothing could be better than Dick Van Dyke in concert!

Fair enough. However, where Day 1 was a tip of the hat to Disney legends, Day 2 was about the now and the immediate future. Hence John Lasseter introducing Billy Crystal to a standing ovation (Lasseter also received a standing ovation) while discussing the upcoming Pixar film Monsters University. Also, Jason Segel coming out with Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy to discuss the new Muppet Movie. And of course, the Avengers assembling. On stage. That’s right, with the exception of the Hulk and Captain America, the entire team came out to watch a trailer that they had never seen. Robert Downey, Jr. made us watch it twice. Basically, it was a parade of celebrities (including Jennifer Garner, Sarah Silverman, and Jon Cryer, to name but a few) and Disney awesomeness (including Rich Ross, Andrew Stanton, and Marvel’s Kevin Feige, to again name but a few). My inner geek setting was at 11.
