Disney’s Aladdin, A New Broadway Musical, Heading to Toronto for Previews

Good things come to those who wait. Disney Theatrical Productions has officially announced that Aladdin, a new musical based on the Academy Award winning animated film, will play its pre-Broadway engagement at Toronto’s Ed Mirvish Theatre (formerly the Canon) November 13, 2013 to January 12, 2014 and will open at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre in 2014. The show will feature music by Alan Menken; lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin with a book by Beguelin. Casey Nicholaw will direct and choreograph.

Mary Poppins currently is installed at the New Amsterdam. It will close on March 3, 2013 and the theatre will get a much needed refurbishment.

Aladdin Accident Video – Flipped Flying Carpet Stops Show

On September 25th at the 4:50 pm show of Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular at California Adventure there was a frightening malfunction of the flying carpet effect during the show. Thankfully, redundant safety systems prevented any real injury, but the show was stopped and the audience evacuated while performers on the flying carpet swung upside down above the audience.

Here’s another angle that shows the carpet actually flipping over:

Well, at least it wasn’t anything violent.

I wasn’t going to post about this incident, chalking it up to a freak accident, but it turns out this is not the only time the flying carpet effect has had problems. Spoilers and more details below:
