“LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION!” on another DHS History Lesson. Remember, we are discussing the past at the Studios in honor of its upcoming 25th anniversary on May 1st. Now this week, we are covering one of the weirdest things Disney has ever done, Disney’s Doug LIVE!

Now, the show itself wasn’t weird, it was how they obtained the show. Now, this isn’t DHS related to begin with, but it becomes intertwined eventually. So, this animated series originally premiered in 1991 on Nickelodeon. It had Doug Funnie going through the trials and tribulations of his new school in Bluffington with his friend, Skeeter, his crush, Patti, enemy, Roger and his trusty dog, Porkchop, among others. Throughout the show, he would write in his journal, which would become the show’s narration.

Here’s the catch, Disney bought Jumbo Pictures, the creator of Doug’s production company, in 1996…which included the rights to Doug. So, in 1996, the show reappeared on ABC’s Saturday Morning, then eventually One Saturday Morning (see my love letter to that here). With the channel change came two new titles (Brand Spanking New! Disney’s Million Dollar Arm Featurette and Clips

Last night I saw a preview screening of Million Dollar Arm from Disney. I’m technically embargoed for my full review, but I can sum it up in three words you’ll be happy to read – Classic Disney Film.

Here’s a trailer:

Based on a true story, the plot follows sports agent JB Bernstein (Jon Hamm) who finds that business has changed and things aren’t going well for his career. In a last ditch effort to save his livelihood he concocts a scheme to find baseball’s next great pitching ace. Hoping to find a young cricket bowler he can turn into a major league baseball star, JB travels to India to produce a reality show competition called “The Million Dollar Arm.” With the help of cantankerous but eagle-eyed retired baseball scout Ray Poitevint (Alan Arkin), he discovers Dinesh (played by Madhur Mittal from “Slumdog Millionaire”) and Rinku (played by Suraj Sharma from “Life of Pi”), two 18-year-old boys who have no idea about playing baseball, yet have a knack for throwing a fastball. Hoping to sign them to major league contracts and make a quick buck, JB brings the boys home to America to train.

While the Americans are definitely out of their element in India, the boys, who have never left their rural villages, are equally challenged when they come to the States. As the boys learn the finer points of baseball, JB, with the help of his charming friend Brenda (Lake Bell), learns valuable life lessons about teamwork, commitment and what it means to be a family.

Directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Tom McCarthy, Walt Disney Pictures’ drama “Million Dollar Arm” stars Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Bill Paxton, Suraj Sharma, Lake Bell and Alan Arkin. The producers are Mark Ciardi, Gordon Gray and Joe Roth. The executive producers are Palak Patel, Kevin Halloran, Bill Simmons and Connor Schell.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Wrapping Up The Final Details of New Fantasyland

We’re getting down to the nitty-gritty on the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. This week contractors were kept very busy working on the long list of little details that needed finishing around the attraction. From new welding on the track, to a wider emergency staircase, to a whole bunch more trees, Snow White’s Mountain has really changed character in just the last few weeks.

Meanwhile, testing has begun with actual people riding the roller coaster. The May 2nd grand opening will bring the newest family-style coaster and the final element of New Fantasyland. On board the attraction, guests will be treated to an exciting, musical ride into the mine “where a million diamonds shine” as the lovable world of Sleepy, Doc, Grumpy, Bashful, Sneezy, Happy and Dopey comes to life.

One feature will be first-of-its-kind ride vehicles mounted in cradle-like pivots that allow the vehicles to swing back and forth during the ride. Adding to the fun, the journey will be accompanied by beloved music from the Disney film classic. On their adventure, riders pass by animated figures of Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs and playful forest critters.
