Disney+ has announced the cancellation of the Disney Branded Television/20th Television’s action fantasy series “American Born Chinese” series after only one season…and one that ended on a huge cliffhanger at that.
The Details
“American Born Chinese,” based on the hit graphic novel of the same name, followed a mythological god (played by Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh) whose life becomes entangled with an average American teenager (played by Ben Wang). The ensemble also included Yeoh’s fellow Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu.
Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) was the primary director, in addition to serving as an EP.
The decision comes less than eight months after the eight-episode first season was released May 24, 2023.
At the time of this post, the show was still available to watch on Disney+.
More Cancellations
The cancellation of “American Born Chinese” comes less than two months after Disney+ cancelled “The Muppets Mayhem” also after one season.
Other 2023 cancellations by Disney+ include “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.,” “National Treasure: Edge of History,” “Big Shot,” “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” “The Mysterious Benedict Society,” and “Willow.”
In fact, since the pandemic, it’s rare that any Disney+ series lasts more than one or two seasons.
