Disney+ Reveals Details on ‘American Born Chinese,’ ‘The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,’ and More at TCA Winter 2023

Disney+ - TCA Winter 2023

Disney+ focused their portion of the TCA Winter 2023 presentation on new series, and updates on a returning one.

The twice yearly event is hosted by the Television Critics Association (TCA), during which channels and streamers present the latest programming news to the media.

In addition to the “Bono & The Edge: A Sort Of Homecoming, With Dave Letterman” music special, which was also announced during the TCA Winter 2023 presentation, here is what Disney+ has in store for its viewers:

Disney+ revealed new photos from the upcoming series, “American Born Chinese,” which will air sometime Spring 2023.

The series was first announced a year ago at the TCA Winter 2022 event, and most recently appeared on the Disney+ 2023 sizzle reel.

The show, from filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), and based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, focuses on American teen Jin Wang (played by Ben Wang), whose parents immigrated from Taiwan. He is struggling to carve out exactly who he’s supposed to be, socially and culturally.

This is complicated by his aunt Guanyin (Michelle Yeoh, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), who is actually the all-powerful Buddhist bodhisattva of Compassion.

When Jin meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as he unwittingly is entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.

The cast also includes Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Ke Huy Quan (fun fact: as a child he starred as Data in “Goonies” and Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”), Jim Liu, and Sydney Taylor.

Both Yeoh and Quan are currently winning awards this season for their roles in the film “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder

Disney+ announced during their presentation that Season 2 of “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” premieres with all episodes streaming on Feb. 1, 2023.

The new season picks up the story of its central character, Penny Proud (Kyla Pratt), and her iconic family: parents Oscar and Trudy (Tommy Davidson and Paula Jai Parke), twin siblings BeBe and CeCe, and grandmother Suga Mama (JoMarie Payton).

By Penny’s side is her loyal crew: Dijonay Jones (Karen Malina Whit), LaCienega Boulevardez (Alisa Reyes), Zoey Howzer (Soleil Moon Frye), Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins (Keke Palmer), and Michael Collins (EJ Johnson).

Building off the standout success of the series’ debut, season two of “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” continues to tell entertaining and laugh out-loud stories, while highlighting culturally specific experiences of the Black community and addressing universal topics. Various storylines this season include self-worth, interracial dating and Juneteenth.

They then showed a new trailer for the upcoming season, along with a new poster:

Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

The streamer announced at TCA Winter 2023 that Marvel’s “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” will premiere first on the Disney Channel on Friday, February 10, but then the first six episodes will begin streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday, February 15 (U.S. only; international dates to follow).

The highly-anticipated animated series is based on the hit Marvel comic series, and follows the adventures of 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette and her 10-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur, whom she accidentally brings through time into present-day New York City.

Marvel’s “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” received a season 2 renewal in October 2022, even though the series hasn’t even premiered yet. Sounds like it’s worth checking out.

Disney+ also released a new trailer and a new poster for the series:
