Rosario Dawson Says Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’ Revival May Be Happening

Rosario Dawson - Daredevil

Actress Rosario Dawson said this past weekend that Marvel is looking to revive “The Punisher” series with star Jon Bernthal reprising his role.

Dawson was appearing at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) when she brought up the topic.

What She Said

Via a video clip posted to Twitter, Dawson is caught saying, “…I haven’t heard that announcement, but I found out yesterday that ‘The Punisher’ was happening again. So, I feel like it’s my second chance, ’cause it was the only one of the shows that I wasn’t in — and I love Jon Bernthal. So, let’s all make it happen collectively, guys.”

Here’s the clip:

So she seems to first confirm the revival, then slightly walks it back as maybe it might be happening.

Given Marvel’s wall of secrecy, I don’t blame her for not wanting to get in trouble for letting the info out.

UPDATE: Dawson walked her words back even more with this Tweet today:

However, while this could mean the revival isn’t happening, it could also mean she got a call from Feige. I guess we’ll see when he takes the stage at D23 Expo.

Her Involvement

Dawson played a character named Claire Temple across almost all of the Netflix Marvel series.

She first appeared in season one of “Daredevil,” before reprising her role in “Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” “Marvel’s Luke Cage,” “Marvel’s Iron Fist,” and the crossover limited series “Marvel’s The Defenders.”

The actress is currently committed to the title role in the Star Wars series “Ahsoka,” coming to Disney+ in 2023.

Could It Happen?

Yes it could. Marvel has already started bringing characters who have appeared in the Netflix series into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

“Daredevil” actor Charlie Cox has begun reprising his role as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, first in the Sony/Marvel film “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” then with confirmed appearances in this month’s debut of “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” and 2024’s “Spider-Man: Freshman Year” animated series on Disney+.

Meanwhile fellow “Daredevil” actor Vincent D’Onofrio recently reprised his role as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in the series “Hawkeye” on Disney+.

Plus both characters and their actors are confirmed for a new Marvel series, “Daredevil: Born Again,” which was announced last month at SDCC22.

There has also been a big fan push to bring “The Punisher” into the MCU with Bernthal.

The actor is set to appear in the upcoming “American Gigolo” series based on the 1980 film for Showtime, but he’s said in various interviews he’d love to portray Frank Castle, aka “The Punisher,” again.

A D23 Expo Announcement?

Following SDCC22, Marvel president Kevin Feige said he had more announcements planned for next month’s sold-out D23 Expo, so it’s possible a “Punisher” series announcement could be one of them.

I’ll be covering all the big announcements from D23 Expo, so I’ll let you know if it happens.
