Sing-Along Versions of Two Disney Classics Coming to Disney+ July 22

Ariel and Moana

Disney has announced Sing-Along Versions of “The Little Mermaid” and “Moana” will be coming to Disney+ on Friday, July 22.

Several more Sing-Alongs are planned for the streamer before the end of the summer.

What are Sing-Along Versions of Disney Movies?

These versions of the movie feature the lyrics on screen to make it easier for viewers to sing along to the film’s songs.

Currently Disney+ only has one film Sing-Along to enjoy, “Encanto,” but there are also a few ABC specials that have the sing-along feature.

“The Little Mermaid”

One of Disney’s most popular animated musicals, “The Little Mermaid” was released in theaters November 17, 1989.

The 28th Disney animated feature film, it is loosely based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen.

The songs were co-written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. Menken also wrote the film’s score.

The film’s success has led to a sequel, a Broadway stage musical, a wing at a Walt Disney World resort, and a live stage TV version that aired on ABC in 2019.

A live-action remake is due in theaters in 2023.

“Moana”

Also set in and around water, “Moana” captivated fans of all ages with its theatrical release on November 23, 2016.

The songs were written by Opetaia Foa’i, Mark Mancina, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, while the score was written by Mancina. Most songs are in English, but Samoan and the Tokelauan language are used as well.

Little known fact: director Taika Waititi (“Thor: Love and Thunder”) actually wrote the first version of the script, but most of that ended up being rewritten after he left the project.

“Moana” recently inspired a room update at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort at Walt Disney World, as well as a new attraction, “Journey of Water,” that will open soon at EPCOT.

There is also an animated Disney+ series in the works.

  2. Hi! So I’m watching the Little mermaid sing-along and, as a musician, was wondering if there is additional instrumental score that has been added. Do you know?
