Actor Peter Dinklage Speaks Out on Upcoming “Snow White” Film and Disney Responds

We recently wrote about the initial casting news for Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of “Snow White,” and now it seems actor Peter Dinklage has taken offense at the movie being remade.

Dinklage, who best known for portraying Tyrion Lannister on the HBO television series “Game of Thrones,” recently did an interview with comedian/actor Marc Maron on his “WTF” podcast.

At one point during the conversation, Dinklage said, “I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that (expletive deleted) backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together. What the (expletive deleted) are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox?”

His criticism elicited a response from Disney who issued the following statement:

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period”

The film has been in development for three years already and the studio says it has been reimagining the dwarf characters since the earliest stages and intend for the characters to be CGI-animated.

Not sure if that will assuage Dinklage’s concerns though. If we hear of his reply, we’ll let you know.

In addition to “Game of Thrones,” Dinklage has appeared in Disney’s “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” as well as Marvel’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”
