Director James Gunn Talks About ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’

In a recent interview with Deadline’s “Hero Nation” podcast, director James Gunn talked about several of his projects, including Marvel’s upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3.”

“This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians,” Gunn stated about the anticipated third installment of the series.

“It’s big; it’s so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be.” he also said, adding “I just want to be true to the characters, the story, and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story.”

Actor Dave Bautista, who plays GOTG member Drax, echoed that sentiment last fall in an interview with Comicbook.com, where he pointed out he’s been doing the role for 10 years now.

“Part of the journey is the end,” Bautista said of the conclusion of his run as Drax. “You know, all things must end, and, you know, I’m looking forward to kind of wrapping this up with my friends and family.”

I’m sure he won’t miss all those hours in the make-up chair.

“Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3” is due in theaters in the U.S. May 3, 2023, but we will see the group several more times before that.

As seen at the end of “Avengers: Endgame,” Thor leaves Earth with Rocket and the rest of the Guardians, and they will be appearing in the Taika Waititi-directed “Thor: Love and Thunder,” which will be in U.S. theaters July 8, 2022.

“I Am Groot,” an animated series about the Guardian’s character will hit Disney+ sometime in 2022, as announced on Disney+ Day last November. Gunn is producing but I’m not sure if he has any other involvement with the show.

Gunn is also directing and writing “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,” which will air on Disney+ at the end of 2022. Bautista, along with Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff will reprise their roles from the film series.

Gunn is currently having great success with his DC Comics movie “The Suicide Squad” and its spin-off series “Peacemaker” on HBOMax. So much so he already has plans for another spin-off series based on that part of the DC universe. Which means “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3” may be Gunn’s last Marvel project.

“Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3” is now filming in Atlanta, Georgia.

Nothing else is known about the film except that actor Will Poulter has been cast as the character of Adam Warlock. He was shown at the end of “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2” to be in a sarcophagus as Ayesha, the Golden High Priestess of the Sovereign, announces “That, my child, is the next step in our evolution. More powerful. More beautiful. More capable of destroying the Guardians of the Galaxy. I think I shall call him… Adam.”

Are you excited to see “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3”? What do you think will happen to the characters if this is the end for “this team of Guardians” as Gunn put it? Let us know in comments.
