After getting our first taste of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” in a sizzle reel at the D23 Expo and an early cast photo, we’ve been pretty much in the dark about the movie. We know that for the first Star Wars movie that’s not a part of the saga series, Lucasfilm has decided to go back and revisit a crucial moment in the Star Wars legends – the heist that obtained the plans for the original Death Star. Those plans are later added to R2D2 by Princess Leia in Episode IV – A New Hope – the original 1977 mega-hit that started it all.
This morning the first official teaser trailer had its world premiere on ABC’s Good Morning America (that’s synergy for you).
Everyone who was worried about how this film would look can stop now. That was out of this world, better than I could have possibly hoped for.
What I saw in the trailer
The rebellion rounds up a crew of criminals and rogues to pull off a very important mission. We’re taken to the Rebel base on Yavin where they’re bringing in Felicity Jones’ character, Jyn Erso, in handcuffs. She meet the rebel leader Mon Mothma who gives her a dangerous mission – find the Empire’s new mega-weapon and how to destroy it.
I love this quote from Jones’ character, “This is a rebellion, isnt it? I rebel.”
Then we see the Death Star in its final stage of assembly as it gets ready for a major weapons test and what looks like Ben Mendelsohn in his uniform. (Is that Grand Moff Tarkin or someone else (Grand Admiral Thrawn?)?)
Then comes a sizzle reel of characters, stunts, and amazing sets. Including what looks like our first glimpse of Darth Vader. I’m digging the Forest Whitaker character too.
The cast for “Rogue One” includes Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Neil Breen, and Alan Tudyk.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will enter theaters on December 16, 2016.
