I recently had the pleasure of sitting in on a virtual roundtable interview with directors, Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff from Disney’s animated feature The Lion King. In the talk they discussed the recent conversion to 3-D, how it impacted the film, it’s successful return to the box office, along with general questions about the making of the film. The Lion King 3-D’s theatrical run has been extended at least one more weekend and the Blu-Ray/DVD/Limited Edition 3-D Combo pack hits shelves on October 4th.
On September 25th at the 4:50 pm show of Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular at California Adventure there was a frightening malfunction of the flying carpet effect during the show. Thankfully, redundant safety systems prevented any real injury, but the show was stopped and the audience evacuated while performers on the flying carpet swung upside down above the audience.
This video shows the moments after the carpet flipped over. Both performers can be seen strapped into the carpet, but the Jasmine performer is obviously (and understandably) upset. So don’t watch the video if that bothers you:
Here’s another angle that shows the carpet actually flipping over:
Well, at least it wasn’t anything violent.
I wasn’t going to post about this incident, chalking it up to a freak accident, but it turns out this is not the only time the flying carpet effect has had problems. Spoilers and more details below:
We’re well into Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party season at the Magic Kingdom and soon, all across America, families will be heading out to their local pumpkin patch in search of the perfect carving pumpkin. So I thought this would be a good time to link to some pumpkin carving patterns, with a Disney twist, of course.
A few new and some of the oldies but goodies are available over on Family.com. Also check out this pattern resource on FamilyFun. There are also a few free Disney patterns at StoneyKins.com
Some still around from previous years are:
A nice collection from Cartoon Jr. website including Villain and Princess stencils.
A few Disney Stencils from Chicago-Halloween. Includes Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc
You have to dig into the internet archives to find these. But don’t miss this collection of Disney Villain patterns.
Alas some of the patterns I found last year are not available this year, so even if you don’t plan on using all these patterns, it might be a good idea to download a couple of your favorites to use next year or for other projects.
As a bonus, below the jump is a video from the 2010 Halloween decor at Walt Disney World explaining how the park takes sketches from David Hartmann, an art director with Walt Disney Entertainment and then has Disney’s Event and Decorating Support make them real.
Editor: please welcome Rob Shahan who will form the other half of our Dancing With the Stars recap duo.
Hi there everyone and thanks for dropping by this week’s Dancing with the Stars Blog! This week’s episode was entertaining and upbeat as each dancer had their choice of jammin’ to either the Jive or the Quickstep.
First off though, a little background on yours truly. I am a huge TV fan but am lacking in the dance knowledge department. Sure, I can groove on the dance floor (after some liquid courage) but I will leave the dance technique judging to the experts. I will bring a light hearted and fun perspective to the blog as well as my witty humor.
Hope Solo (no relation to Han) and her dance partner Maks Chmerkovskiy were up first. Earlier this year she wowed a worldwide audience as her USA Women’s Soccer Team finished second to Japan in the World Cup and now she is trying to kick (pun intended) that athletic prowess over to the dance floor. Dressed in a soccer jersey (including high-heel Converses – is Converse the official athletic footwear of DWTS?) and dancing the Jive, she gave us a sexy shimmy at the beginning of the dance and had fun throughout. The judges said she lost some of her kicks and flicks (note to self, I need to look up the definition of “flick”), she could use a little more rehearsal and relax a little more. No one on the show is more athletic than Hope (and she cleans up very, very well). The judges moved their critical opinion to the scoreboard and gave her an overall score of 19. p.s. Judge Bruno later said flicks come from the knee – I am learning!
Kristin Cavallari and I have a history. Earlier this year I sent her and her then-finance Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler a wedding gift. Sure it was the least expensive item on their registry but I thought a thank you note from them would be a unique memento to have in my sports room. They received the gift and were kind enough to send me a thank you card!
