Five things my clients have taught me about traveling to Walt Disney World

This post brought to you by Christina Wood of Pixie Vacations, the preferred Disney vacation travel planner of The Disney Blog.

One of the fun things about my job is that I usually learn something from each person I send to Disney World. Maybe it’s something odd, like the best parts of the alligator to eat (yes, this happened), but more often than not, I learn something useful I can pass onto the next client.  You’d be surprised how different each client’s approach to their trip can be and what can happen on your average Disney vacation. Here are a few of my favorite lessons:

5.  Plan carefully. And then plan some more.

Walt Disney World covers 47 square miles. There are four parks, two water parks, Downtown Disney, golf courses, 26 hotels, and more than 200 restaurants. It’s going to take some planning to ensure that you see and do everything you want. Make your dining reservations as far out as possible. If you’re staying on property, get those fastpasses chosen at 60 days out. I’m not an over-planner by any means, but the new system under MyDisneyExperience means you really need to put some thought into your trip; fortunately, it’s also very easy to do and doesn’t take that much time.

The corollary to this, of course, is that if you over plan you’re going to lose your mind, especially if you’re traveling with a larger group.  So make that spreadsheet, use your MDE account, but take it all with a grain of salt. Sometimes you just have to let the magic happen.Read More »Five things my clients have taught me about traveling to Walt Disney World

Junior Petty ride-a-long to get Pixar Cars style makeover

Update: I’ve been sent two car designs for the Piston Cup as created by Pixar Animation Studios. I think they’re pretty neat:

See the real things starting June 13th.

If you’ve parked at the TTC, you’ve probably heard the roar of race cars as they zoom around Walt Disney World Speedway. Sometimes they are actual professional drivers doing some testing or training, but usually that means the Richard Petty Driving Experience is hosting the most thrilling outside-the-berm experience you can enjoy while at the world.

For those who don’t want to drive, they have ride-a-long experiences and not too long ago, the RPDE added Junior Ride-A-Long’s for kids aged 6 to 13 (and 48 inches tall). While I did the driving myself, my son had the opportunity for a ride-a-long with one of the Petty drivers.  He assures me it was an amazing experience. He actually got to go faster than I did, since there was a pro behind the wheel.

As it works now, you ride in a car that had a former life in a NASCAR series and as such they’re stickered up like a real stock car would be. But for the Junior Ride-A-Long’s kids will soon be able to choose between two characters from Pixar’s animated feature film “Cars” – Aiken Axler and Sage VanDerSpin. You may recall that Richard Petty provided the voice of “The King” in the original “Cars” movie.

More changes announced for Disney’s Polynesian Resort

New Excitement at Disney's Polynesian

Disney mentioned changes coming to the Polynesian Resort at the What’s New What’s Next presentation earlier this month, now they’ve updated us with some additional information on what we can expect as the resort transitions.

As announced it will be getting a few DVC Suites as bungalows out over the water. To accommodate this change the name will revert back to its original 1971 opening-day name: Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

Disney also announced a brand new children’s activity center called Club Disney will be opening at the resort next month. Imagineers drew inspiration from classic Disney Little Golden Books, including “Alice In Wonderland,” “Pinocchio” and “Lady and The Tramp” to make the play areas. Club Disney replaces the Neverland Club. Read More »More changes announced for Disney’s Polynesian Resort
