Big news from Star Wars regarding new cast members in Episode VII. Neither is a huge surprise for those who have been paying attention.
Lupita Nyong’o from “12 Years a Slave” for which she one an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and Gwendoline Christie, currently starring in the hit television series “Game of Thrones” have both joined the cast.

Get ready to have a Star Wars Christmas for the foreseeable future. No, George Lucas hasn’t okay the re-release of the infamous made for TV Movie, instead Disney and Lucasfilm are making good on their promise to release a new film set in that famous galaxy far, far, away and long ago every year.
The date they’ve chosen for Episode VII is December 18th, 2015 and just announced today, is the date for the first stand alone Star Wars property (not associated with a trilogy) will open on – December 16th, 2016. Looks like someone at Disney thinks they can make December releases the new family tradition. That probably tells us something about the rating to expect for the films as well.
Although just one date has been announced, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. “Star Wars: Episode VII” director J.J. Abrams has announced the creation of Star Wars: Force for Change, a brand new Star Wars initiative from Disney and Lucasfilm in collaboration with Bad Robot dedicated to finding creative solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems. The first Star Wars: Force for Change campaign will raise funds and awareness for the United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) Innovation Labs and its innovative programs that are benefiting the world’s most vulnerable children. Disney has committed US $1 million to support the launch of Star Wars: Force for Change.
Abrams filmed the announcement from the set of the new film, which itself is pretty cool, perhaps even introducing us to a few of the aliens we might encounter in the film. JJ loves his mysteries, you know?
“The Star Wars fans are some of the most passionate and committed folks around the globe,” says director J.J. Abrams. “We’re thrilled to offer a chance to come behind the scenes as our VIP guests and be in Star Wars: Episode VII. We’re even more excited that by participating in this campaign, Star Wars fans will be helping children around the world through our collaboration with UNICEF Innovation Labs and projects.”
