Disneyland forced to close attractions by OSHA

Update: Sunday 4/14/13 12pm PT Just spoke with our contact at Disneyland and have a new story with important updates to the below post:

Update: Sunday 4/14/13 9am PT– Disneyland opened today with the Matterhorn Bobsleds running. Space Mountain and Soarin’ over California remain closed, according to Disney PR. Yesterday’s Matterhorn closure may have been unrelated to CAL/OSHA inspection. I’m hearing more inspections could happen over the next few days. Still awaiting official statement from Disneyland PR.

Space Mountain

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (CAL/OSHA) delivered seven safety violation citations to the Disneyland resort yesterday for Space Mountain. For some reason (update: the closures were made voluntarily by Disneyland after an internal safety review), this has resulted in three major attractions to be closed at the Disneyland Resort today. Those attractions are Space Mountain, The Matterhorn Bobsleds, and Soarin’ Over California. It’s not yet clear if the Matterhorn and Soarin’ are related to the same CAL/OSHA filing. I’ve asked Disneyland for clarification.

The citations were related a 2006 agreement to make improvements and to inspections following recent accidents such as the man who was seriously injured while cleaning the outside of Space Mountain in November 2012. The findings include simple failures like not having a charged fire extinguisher and more serious ones like failure to protect employees from unsafe ladders or lack of railings preventing a fall hazard. Serious fines of up to $70,000 for each infraction could be levied if Disneyland does not comply immediately with the requests (although appeal is also an option). Total penalties for just the Space Mountain citations could reach over $230,000.

These are the same sort of hazards that forced Disneyland to close Alice in Wonderland until temporary scaffolding could be erected with guardrails. The park still hasn’t made permanent fixes there.

Disneyland Resort for the Holidays is Festive Fun

  • by

This year at the Disneyland Resort you can see something you’ve never seen before, Cars Land decorated for the holidays. It’s as fabulous as it sounds.

In addition to the festive automotive decor of Cars Land (more photos at the bottom of this post) there is also the tasteful glamor of Buena Vista Street, making Disney California Adventure the perfect holiday compliment to the parade, fireworks, and jamboree fun found in Disneyland.

Disneyland Resort Ambassador Team

Disneyland Names 2013 Ambassadors

To become a Disneyland Ambassador is a great honor for any cast member. It’s a tradition that goes back to 1965 when Walt Disney himself selected the first Ambassador, Julie Reihm, to help with community awareness and media interviews. The ambassador represents the 23,000 other… Read More »Disneyland Names 2013 Ambassadors

Win Two Tickets to Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland!

  • by

Mickey’s Halloween Party invites guests, yes, that means adults and children, to dress up in costume and trick-or-treat for candy (and healthy treats) throughout Disneyland. It is a special ticketed event, meaning that Disneyland closes early to those visiting with a regular admission ticket. Guests that purchase a special event ticket can arrive before the party to “mix in” with regular Disneyland guests for three hours prior to the start of Mickey’s private bash. Basically, that means it is a much better deal to buy the ticket to Mickey’s Halloween Party and get there for the early hours — you get some quality park time and the fun festivities of the special event. It’s a win-win.

That isn’t to say those regular guests can’t partake in some seasonal adventure. Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort, to be frighteningly frank, is a lot of spooky fun. Well, it’s not that spooky, your kids will be fine, but it sure is festive, and the fun part is spot on. You don’t have to attend Mickey’s Halloween Party to enjoy the following:Read More »Win Two Tickets to Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland!

Instant Concert… Just Add Water is Fun Addition to DCA’s Entertainment Lineup

When World of Color’s fantastic water fountain infrastructure was added to Disney’s California Adventure there was speculation that they would do both a night and a day show. After wall, why install all that wonderful equipment and only use it once a night. It took awhile, but that speculation finally came true with the re-launch of DCA.

The Goofy Cartoon inspired “Instant Concert… Just Add Water” show is a fun addition to the park’s entertainment lineup. There are a couple different 5-minute length shows that play throughout the day by the water’s edge across the The Little Mermaid. Keep an eye out for them approximately hourly.

This video released by Disney gives you a little hint of what the show is like, without giving it all away. A nice touch.

A fan recorded version of another show is below the jump:

Disney California Adventure Park’s Grand Reopening – Videos!

  • by

As readers of this blog surely know, when Disney California Adventure Park opened almost 12 years ago as a second gate to Disneyland it wasn’t the hit that Disney or its fans hoped it would be. In fact, it was written off by many as a ridiculous concept done on the cheap. For the record, I’ve always enjoyed the park, but I understand what people were saying, it needed more everything: rides, shows, food, theming, and above all else, it needed more magic. It needed more Disney.
