Disney News Round-Up!

There have been a lot of random Disney news stories appearing recently, so I thought I would bunch them all together so you don’t have to go searching! This will cover Parks, ABC, Disney Channel, Consumer Products…and MORE! (I realize I sound like a Ronco Rotisserie ad…after you read this you can set it…and forget it!)

  • Electric Holiday– This has become one of my “I am the only Disney fan that is SUPER EXCITED for this” moments (along the same lines as the Hercules 15th Anniversary Pin and the unveiling of the new Disney Parks promotion “Limited-Time Magic”). If you are unfamiliar…Barney’s NYC partnered with Disney this year for their annual holiday window display. This year follows Minnie and other Disney characters as they get ready to hit the runway wearing some of Barney’s most popular designers. This did get some controversy when the concept art was released and it revealed Disney characters in stereotypical super skinny model bodies. Personally, I feel like since this is animation, there is no argument (everything in animation is over-the-top anyways…), but it still sprouted over the interwebs. The teaser looks wonderful and I am overall excited to see the products and the full short!

Disney Parks and Resorts is out with their next major promotion. Disney Parks Launches New TV Commercials

Disney Memories - Magic Kingdom at Twilight

A new series of commercials from Disney Parks has hit the airwaves. They position a Disney Parks vacation as a sort of memory factory from which there is a limited time to extract those precious moments. I say it a bit cynically, but that really is the formula that Disney and its research partners have found to work the best.

With a world where economic uncertainty is the one thing that’s for certain, surveys and guests have told Disney that guests are looking to make the one thing that can’t be taken away from them, special family bonds built by time spent together.

As it turns out, Disney is uniquely suited to provide this experience. The Disneyland Resort has received a kickstart with the revitalized California Adventure gate making it a true multi-day destination and the Walt Disney World resort has perfected the art of enveloping you in the magic to such a point that you never have to experience anything non-Disney form the moment you arrive at the airport until your departure. Not quite as good as teleporting your from your kitchen to the Magic Kingdom, but it will have to do until the Imagineers perfect that option.

Follow us below the jump to see the rest of the new commercials, then please let us know which commercial works the best for you and rate the whole campaign from “5 – Great Idea” to “1 – Needs Improvement” in the comments.

Why Disney Should Build Its Next Park in Toronto

For decades it’s been accepted wisdom that North America can only support two Disney theme park resorts—Disneyland and Walt Disney World— one on each side of the continent.

I say it’s time for Disney to build a third, and there’s only one place to do it: Toronto.

Considering my whereabouts, it’s an audaciously self-serving suggestion. But there are some solid reasons for Disney to choose Toronto, besides making me one very happy guy.

To give everyone a geography primer, the actual city of Toronto is surrounded by several large municipalities, each with hundreds of thousands of residents. All told, well over eight million Canadians live within a driving distance of a couple of hours or so.

A little research into population data reveals that, counting only the major metro hubs, about 108 million Americans live within nine hours of Toronto—35 per cent of the U.S. population. That number is expected to grow to 141 million by 2050.

When I started writing this article, the U.S. Northeast was going to be my pick. Disney could easily build the park in New Jersey or Upstate New York and have it be quite successful. But Toronto’s location outside of the U.S. is actually a big, counterintuitive plus.
