Exciting news for “Tron” fans: director Joachim Ronning has shared that the third film in the series, “Tron: Ares,” has officially started filming.
The Details
The news was shared by Ronning via a post made on his Instagram of a directors chair with the logo “Tr3n,” referring to “Tron 3,” and it being the third film in the trilogy.
The photo was accompanied by the text, “WEEK 1 ON THE GRID.”
The film was first announced in January 2023, and was supposed to start filming on August 14, 2023, but shooting had to be postponed because of the writers’ and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
It’s good to see shooting is finally back on track in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
No release date has been set for the movie, but the earliest it would make the schedule is 2025.
The Film
Plot details haven’t been revealed for “Tron: Ares,” but what is known is that the screenplay was penned by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, while the story is by original Tron director Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird.
Actor Jared Leto leads the cast and also serves as a producer on the project with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.
Other cast members include Evan Peters (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”), Greta Lee (“The Morning Show”), Jodie Turner-Smith (“Queen & Slim”), Sarah Desjardins (“Yellowjackets”), and Cameron Monaghan (“Star Wars Jedi: Survivor,” “Gotham”).
Ronning, who has also directed films like “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” and co-directed “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” has said “Tron: Ares” is “a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human.”
The History
“Tron” debuted in 1982, and starred Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer who was sucked inside a game and forced to participate in digital games inside The Grid in an effort to defeat the Master Control Program (David Warner).
He did so with the help of the programs Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) and Yori (Cindy Morgan).
While the film wasn’t popular initially, it developed a cult following. It has also been acknowledged as having revolutionary computer-generated special effects for the time.
The story was picked up in 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” where Flynn’s adult son Sam (played by Garrett Hedlund) responds to a message from his long-lost father (Bridges), and is transported back into The Grid. There, Sam, his father, and the algorithm Quorra (Olivia Wilde), must stop the malevolent program Clu (also played by Jeff Bridges) from invading the real world.
There is also an animated series called “Tron: Uprising” that came out in 2012, which takes place between the two films.
Both movies, plus the series, are available to watch on Disney+.
Disney continued the story with the opening of the “Tron Lightcycle Power Run” coaster attraction at Shanghai Disneyland when the park first opened on June 16, 2016.
A similar attraction “Tron Lightcycle Run” opened at Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World on April 4, 2023.
