ABC’s ‘Station 19’ Will End After Upcoming Seventh Season

The upcoming seventh season will be the last for ABC‘s “Station 19,” the network has announced. The decision will allow the series to craft a proper send-off, and wrap up storylines.

The Details

Created by Shonda Rimes, the drama is a spinoff of “Grey’s Anatomy,” and follows a team of Seattle-based firefighters as they work together, build relationships, and navigate life’s ups and downs, all while keeping the city safe.

The series stars Jaina Lee Ortiz as Andy Herrera, Jason George as Ben Warren, Grey Damon as Jack Gibson, Barrett Doss as Victoria Hughes, Alberto Frezza as Ryan Tanner, Jay Hayden as Travis Montgomery, Okieriete Onaodowan as Dean Miller, Danielle Savre as Maya Bishop and Miguel Sandoval as Captain Pruitt Herrera.

The cancellation is puzzling as “Station 19” has often been ABC’s No. 2 drama series behind “Grey’s Anatomy.” As of April 2023, “Station 19” averaged 8.3 million total viewers in Season 6.

Both series have participated in crossover episodes, which has helped the ratings on both shows, though ABC has stated only one crossover will occur in the last season.

There has also been some behind-the-scenes turmoil as Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige were appointed showrunners ahead of Season 7, replacing longtime chief Krista Vernoff, who announced her departure from both “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Station 19” in January 2023.

Here is a scene from one of those recent crossover episodes:

Season Seven

In season 7, which premieres March 14, 2024, “Station 19” is moving from its normal 8pm time slot on Thursday to 10pm the same night, and will now follow Grey’s Anatomy vs. being its lead-in. Former Fox show “9-1-1,” another first responder drama, will be taking over the 8pm slot from “Station 19.”

“For seven seasons ‘Station 19’ has been a highlight of the ABC lineup thanks to Shonda and Betsy’s incredible vision, beloved characters and compelling storytelling,” said Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group. “With Zoanne and Peter at the helm of the upcoming farewell season, we have so much to look forward to, most notably the celebration of the show’s milestone 100th episode.”

There is already a Change.org petition to save the show.

ABC has cancelled a lot of series from the 2022-2023 season, most recently “The Rookie: Feds.” This is the first cancellation of the 2024 season.
