The next “Doctor Who” episode will be called “The Giggle,” and not only is it the final of the three 60th anniversary specials, but it will be the Fourteenth Doctor’s final adventure before regenerating.

The Details

Time is running out for the Fourteenth Doctor (played once again by David Tennant). In this final episode of the 60th anniversary trilogy, the Doctor, along with his companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), finally come face to face with the Toymaker (Neil Patrick Harris), a villain who hasn’t been seen on “Doctor Who” in 55 years.

While not much is known about the 60th anniversary finale, this last episode may ruffle the feathers of dedicated “Doctor Who” fans, according to showrunner Russell T Davies.

In the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine (#598) he says: “There will be controversial events in [“The Giggle”]. If you listen and watch the commentary on the iPlayer, I unroll a whole new ‘Doctor Who’ mythology for you, based around the events taking place. And I’m explaining this to David Tennant and his mind is exploding. That commentary will have absolutely exclusive information that will rock the world. I hope you’ll all find it fascinating. It’s a whole new way of looking at the history of ‘Doctor Who’ and I can’t wait to see the reaction”

We also know, from images released from the episode, that the episode also features appearances from UNIT leader Kate Lethbridge Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), who is slated to get her own spin-off, Charlie De Melo (“Coronation Street”) as Charles Banerjee, Alexander Devrient (“Ted Lasso”) as Colonel Ibrahim, and John Mackay (“The Hollow Crown”) as historical figure John Logie Baird, who invented an early form of television.

The Original Toymaker

The Toymaker first debuted in the four-part 1966 serial “The Celestial Toymaker,” which pitted the First Doctor (William Hartnell) and his companions (Peter Purves as Steven Taylor and Jackie Lane as Dodo Chaplet) against the seemingly all-powerful being, played at the time by Michael Gough.

Most of this episode was lost, but will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and Steelbook editions on December 31, 2024, with animation and off-air audio from the episode being used to recreate the missing segments.
