Disney Receives 22 Oscar Nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards

2023 Academy Awards nominations

The 2023 Oscar nominations were announced today (Jan. 24, 2023), and Disney-branded films received a total of 22 nominations.

Searchlight Pictures’ “The Banshees of Inisherin” led with nine total nominations, including “Best Picture” and “Best Director” for Martin McDonagh.

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” received five nominations, including Angela Bassett in the “Actress in a Supporting Role.” Her nomination made Oscar history as the first woman, the first person of color, and the first Marvel Studios actor to be nominated for an Academy Award for their performance in a comic book adaptation.

The box office juggernaut ($2+ billion worldwide) “Avatar: The Way of Water” received four nominations, including “Best Picture,” but curiously director James Cameron was snubbed in the “Best Directing” category.

Rounding out the Disney-branded nominations are Disney/Pixar’s “Turning Red,” Searchight’s “Empire of Light,” Walt Disney’s “Le Pupille,” and National Geographic’s “Fire of Love” with one nomination each.

The reading of the nominations was done via a live presentation hosted by actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams.

The 2023 Oscars will be awarded on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will air live on ABC.
