Shanghai Disney Resort Reopens After Another Pandemic Closure

Shanghai Disney Resort

Shanghai Disney Resort has fully reopened to visitors today (Nov 25, 2022) after a nearly month-long closure due to COVID.

The Details

The theme park was shut down on Halloween, October 31, 2022, soon after a Guest tested positive.

Some facilities that are part of the larger Shanghai Disney Resort, like Disneytown and the Wishing Star Park area, reopened Nov. 17, 2022.

But today Shanghai Disney Resort reopened the theme park and the Toy Story Hotel, which were the last two places to remain closed.

Shanghai’s lower daily caseload of COVID, compared to Beijing and other large Chinese cities, prompted the park’s decision to reopen.

While Guests were welcomed back this morning, Shanghai Disneyland is limiting the number of visitors, and those admitted must show proof of a negative coronavirus test taken in the previous 48 hours.

Some attractions, shows, shops, and restaurants will remain suspended temporarily, or will run at limited capacity to comply with pandemic rules, as well, the theme park said.

Shanghai Disney Resort also said in a separate statement that visitors coming from outside Shanghai can enjoy most of the park experiences, but are barred from dining in indoor restaurants or shopping at retail locations for the first five days. After the first five days, they can move inside the resort freely.

The Closure

Shanghai Disney Resort abruptly suspended operations on Monday, October 31, 2022, at 11:39am local time (03:39 GMT) to comply with China’s strict COVID-19 prevention measures.

All Guests inside the park at the time had to undergo testing and were not allowed to leave until they were cleared of the virus.

With China’s zero-tolerance COVID policies, Shanghai Disney has been closed several times during the pandemic.

It closed earlier this year on March 21, reopening after three months on June 30.

And a year ago, a COVID scare on Halloween 2021 caused Shanghai Disney to also abruptly close, trapping guests inside until each person had a negative test result.

Let’s hope Shanghai Disney Resort can avoid any more closures due to the pandemic.
