Shanghai Disney Resort has abruptly suspended operations on Monday, October 31, 2022, at 11:39am local time (03:39 GMT) to comply with China’s strict COVID-19 prevention measures.
The Details
The Shanghai government said on its official WeChat account the park was barring people from entering or exiting, and that all visitors inside would need to await the results of their tests before they could leave.
The theme park continued to operate rides for visitors stuck in the park during the closure on Monday, Chinese social media users reported. The two hotels at the resort also remained open.
The city health bureau and Disney said guests all tested negative and were allowed to leave by 8:30pm.
Additionally, the government says anyone who had visited the park since October 27 would need to test for COVID-19 three times in three day.
The resort had already said on Saturday that it had started operating with a reduced workforce to comply with COVID measures.
It also has been requiring guests to wear masks, undergo temperature checks, and present a negative nucleic acid test (which helps detect viruses and bacteria) up to 72 hours before entering the facilities. People who have been abroad within the last 10 days are not even allowed at the resort.
Park Statement
In a statement to Guests, Shanghai Disney posted the following on its website:
“In order to follow the requirement of pandemic prevention and control, Shanghai Disney Resort, including Shanghai Disneyland, Disneytown and Wishing Star Park will be closed starting Monday, October 31, 2022, with immediate effect. We will notify guests as soon as we have a confirmed date to resume operations.
We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide refund or exchanges for all guests impacted during this period.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Recent Closures
With China’s zero-tolerance COVID policies, Shanghai Disney has been closed several times during the pandemic.
It closed earlier this year on March 21, reopening after three months on June 30.
And a year ago, a COVID scare on Halloween 2021 caused Shanghai Disney to close, trapping guests inside until each person had a negative test result.
As soon as we hear of a reopening, we’ll let you know, but as of now, this closure is indefinite.
