Madness works for Marvel as “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” opens up at #1 at U.S. box office, and in major markets worldwide.
The team-up of Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch brought in $185 million in the U.S., with the film showing in 4,534 theaters (according to the industry site Box Office Mojo).
That gives “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” the biggest U.S. opening weekend of 2022. The opening weekend also almost eclipsed the entire $232 theatrical run of the first “Doctor Strange” movie in 2016.
According to Disney, 36% of overall box office ticket sales came from premium formats like IMAX. With $33 million from Imax alone, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” ranks among the company’s top 10 global opening weekends.
Internationally, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” brought in $265 million at the box office, bringing the final total to $450 million for the film.
Of the major international markets, the biggest opening was South Korea, with a total of $30 million, followed by the U.K. with $24 milllion, and Mexico with $21.5 million (all totals via Box Office Mojo).
Overall, that $450 million worldwide total is the second biggest opening for a Hollywood film in the pandemic era, behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which also featured Doctor Strange. It is also the fourth highest opening ever for an MCU title.
The next Marvel title to be released will be “Thor: Love and Thunder,” on July 8, 2022.
