Marvel Studios’ ‘Avengers: Endgame’ slides to 2nd in 4th weekend

The launch of balletic action fantasy “John Wick: Parabellum,” the third film of a popular trilogy, at the box office was too much for Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame” to overcome and maintain its top spot at the box office for a fourth weekend.

While Wick took in $57 million, Endgame powered to $29.4M in its fourth frame for a respectable 2nd place. This is a drop of only 53% which is actually a bit stronger than the usual pattern. For Disney this is still an impressive total pushing Endgame over $770.8M beating “Avatar” which had $760M domestically.

Internationally, Endgame scored a still impressive $46.8M in 55 countries. While still a 55% drop from the previous weekend, it shows the movie has legs overseas. The overseas total is now $1.84 billion.

Add domestic and international totals together, Endgame is sitting at a very respectable $2.62B globally. It’s going to be a close call to see if the Avengers can take down the Na’vi. The gap is $173 million.

The new Disney is the snake that’s so long it eats its own tail. Disney’s “Aladdin” releases May 24th, “Dark Phoenix” from Fox on June 7, “Toy Story 4” on June 21. It’s going to be hard for Endgame to beat out Avatar, not even considering films from other studios.

The good news is that with “Captain Marvel” and Endgame, Disney/Marvel owns the top two spots at the box office right now. Let’s see if that trend continues with another record year for Disney at the box office.
