For those of you who haven’t found it in your pocketbook to join Hulu just to watch “Marvel’s Runaways,” Disney is bringing the teen drama-comedy series to its Freeform cable channel. The channel will replay the first episode from season following the season finale of “Cloak and Dagger” on August 2.
As this is thought to be part of a marketing deal to drive more Hulu subscribers, it’s unknown if more than just one episode will be shown on Freeform. The 10 episodes that make up season one of Marvel’s Runaways are available on Hulu right now.
Runaways is based off a hit Marvel graphic artist series. A group of kids who have their own issues with each other find out that their parents are all super villains and are forced to unite and find their own super powers in order to fight back against a common foe – their parents.
If Freeform shows the whole season of Runways, it will be only the second Marvel show on Disney’s Freeform. The “Defenders” family of shows, that have more adult content and storytelling, still runs on Netflix and are likely to remain there even once Disney starts up its direct-to-consumer streaming service in 2019.
Now that Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox has been approved by shareholders and is forecast to have smooth sailing through any regulatory situations Disney will increase its stake in Hulu by Fox’s 30%. Add that to Disney’s share of Hulu and they now have controlling interest. Disney will have access to Hulu’s 12 million subscribers to help kickstart their new streaming service, but it’s unlikely that Disney’s competitors, like Comcast, will allow their content to remain on Hulu at that point. However you stack it up, change is coming to where and how Disney presents its online content.
Marvel’s Runaways has been renewed for a second season.
We saw it on TV in Canada… I *think* on Space, it was an awesome show and can’t wait for season 2.
