Disney’s Beauty and the Beast set to pass $1 billion at global box office

Update: according to Disney, the movie roared past $1 billion last night.

Cue up more remakes and re-imaginings of existing Disney properties. Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is about to pass $1 billion at the global box office and it’s not done yet. The dazzling modern update to the 1991 animated classic is the second of Disney’s live-action remakes to earn more than $1B – Alice in Wonderland being the first.

The Walt Disney Studios has been on a bit of a tear at the box office as of late. Of the 29 movies to ever earn more than $1B, Disney’s brand is on 14 (with Star Wars: The Force Awakens being the highest at #3).

As of April 11, Beauty and the Beast was at $436M domestically, and $550M foreign, bringing it to $986M worldwide. With an estimated $9 earnings today (thanks to China), the film should pass $1B tomorrow or Thursday.

The movie recently released a sing-along edition in over 1,000 theaters. Are you planning to see it again either as a sing-along in in the original sit-quietly and enjoy version?
