Fun things to do on Florida’s Space Coast

We live in Central Florida within driving distance of what we locals call the Attractions area. It’s easy to forget that just a few miles away, we have nature’s beauty along Florida’s Atlantic coast. That beauty has attracted some unique attractions both man made and natural.

We recently were invited to stay at Tuckaway Shores Resort just outside of Melbourne, FL. That put us right near many of the great things to do up and down the Space Coast. Here are a few of the fun things we suggest enjoying:

Brevard Zoo – A small non-profit zoo, occupies 75 acres in Melbourne, FL. It may be smaller than the average zoo, but it packs a big punch and has some unique animal exhibits, such as Horseshoe Crabs, Kirk’s dik dik, Meerkats, Nine Banded Armadillo, and more. There are over 550 animals in total.

Cocoa Beach Pier – Dining, Entertainment, Fishing, Surfing, and more. It stretches 800 feet over the ocean offering picturesque views all day long, but there’s an extra bit of magic around sunset.

Kennedy Space Center – See America’s space history up close and watch as tomorrow’s adventures are launched. Don’t miss the chance to see the Space Shuttle Atlantis up close and walk beneath the Saturn V rocket that once took man to the moon.

Jetty Park – Without booking a voyage, there really isn’t any good way to get up close with the cruise ships while they’re docked at Port Canaveral, but you can watch the cruise ships as they depart the port for the high seas at Jetty Park. Bring your lawn chairs and a picnic.

These four attractions just scratch the surface of your options for exploring the Space Coast. The drive from the Orlando attractions area to all these great things to do is just over an hour. But we recommend you do as we did and book a few nights at Tuckaway Shores Resort as your home base for Space Coast exploration. If you’re looking for ways to extend your Central Florida vacation, don’t over look all the fun to be had on Florida’s Atlantic coast.

  1. Highly recommend the Brevard Zoo. The giraffe exhibit is one of the best zoo experiences you’ll ever have. It’s on a raised deck so you see them eye to eye. But be careful. They love to spit on the unsuspecting.
