Most recently he posted some images he rescued for conceptual logos that would have appeared at Walt Disney’s pet ski-resort… Read More »Kevin Kidney’s Amazing Disney Finds

The master work of Marc Davis on 101 Dalmatians Cruella DeVil

Cel_cruella_1_davis

I have been sent five (5) images of Cruella DeVil art as drawn by animator Marc Davis to share with you. These images are early color model cels created by Marc Davis in his development of Cruella DeVil for 101 Dalmatians. They were utilized to determine the final color styling for Cruella throughout her scenes in the film.

Marc Davis, one of Walt Disney’s legendary ‘nine old men’ of animation, was the only artist to work exclusively on Cruella throughout the entire film. This was a first for animation at the Walt Disney Studios. These images are graciously revealed by Marc’s widow, Alice Estes Davis, a Disney Legend in her own right.

Thanks Alice! Those were wonderful. Btw, when is Alice going to get her Window on Main Street at Disneyland?

See my recent review of the 101 Dalmatians Platinum Edition two-disc DVD set. Also, dear readers, don’t forget to enter The Disney Blog’s 101 Dalmatians Giveaway contest before midnight on March 12th. Also check out two more wonderful images from the master Marc Davis below the cut.

Lost: The Other Woman

I should have known after two very full episodes (Kate’s Eggtown and Desmond’s The Constant) we wouldn’t be getting very much from this episode. It’s hard for me to get excited about Juliet but I think they are really trying to show she’s likable and make us feel bad for her. I always felt Juliet was the “other woman” anyway, among my tight ensemble cast of Losties, but this episode shows us anther part of her Other-ness.

Let’s start with Juliet since we’re already there, shall we?
The scene opens with Juliet discussing her arrival (to where?) with a therapist. I think they were trying to trick us to thinking that she was one of the Six. But I knew better, this was an honest to goodness flashback to when Juliet first arrived on the Island.

101 Dalmatians Great DVD Giveaway Contest

101dalmatian_boxart I remember the last time Disney released 101 Dalmatians on DVD to the public. McDonalds has those great Happy Meal Xmas Ornaments and Disneyland’s Main Street USA was festooned with the sculptures of 101 cute little dalmatian puppies. Ah… those were the days. It’s hard to believe that was 10 years ago. But it was and it’s been 10 years since 101 Dalmatians have been let out of the vault in search of milkbones.

This release, the platinum edition release, features a wonderfully done digitally remastered print of the movie. The detail is much more noticeable than on my decade old DVD. The other affect this has is to really bring out the lines and motion of the master animators who drew these characters, especially the marvelous “Cruella DeVil” as brought to live by Marc Davis.

Also included in the two-disc DVD set are a host of special features. My favorites were the ‘deleted songs’. It would have been a very different picture if all those songs had been left in. There is also a documentary, some games, and a new music video from teen Disney Channel star Selena Gomez.

The 101 Dalmatians: Platinum Edition 2-disc DVD set is available now at Amazon and at stores near you. But The Disney Blog has a few copies to give away to you lucky readers. We also have an autographed “Key Set” mini-poster signed by Lisa Davis (voice of Anita) and Alice Davis (wife of Marc Davis, Cruella’s animator).

To enter the contest please fill out the contest entry form. One entry per person. Enter before March 12th at Midnight EDT. Winners will be contacted via email for shipping information. Shipping to US addresses only. You can enter overseas, but I’m only able to ship to US addresses. Not valid where prohibited by law. Thanks!

The full press release and details for the DVD is below the cut.
