Pirates Trailer: So What Did You Think?

Alright. Show of hands. How many of you Tivo’d "Dancing With The Stars" just to fast forward to the Pirates Trailer? I know I did. If you don’t mind a few spoilers, here’s what I thought.

Based on what I saw tonight, I expect the third movie in the Pirates Of The Caribbean series to be about three and a half hours long. It will have to be that long to fit in all the amazingly cool stuff we just saw glimpses of. It’s no surprise that Johnny Depp still has it, Captain Jack is by far the star of this series. The trip to save ‘witty Jack’ is probably worthy of a whole movie, but it’s effectively just the movie’s overture.

What did we see? Some amazing special effects, including a few scenes that were embargoed up until now (ship on the sand, whirlpool battle, waterfall at World’s End). Chow Yun-Fat and a host of pirate baddies. What looks like a very awesome battle scene between the forces of Captain Jack and Davy Jones. A really quick glimpse of a ‘Davy Jones’ Flying Dutchman face that looked like it could be Captain Jack. Anyone know for sure?

What we didn’t see? No sign of Jack’s father, we’ve seen pics of The Rolling Stone’s Keith Richards as Jack’s father, but no confirmation he made the final cut of the movie. No Commander Norrington, at the end of the 2nd movie, he was in the catbird’s seat. I can’t wait to see how that is resolved too.

Apparently, this is the same trailer everyone saw at ShoWest. A few lucky souls also got to see the trailer last night at special screenings for the 40th Anniversary of the Disneyland attraction’s opening. My source says the atmosphere was very positive from the first chords through both showings of the trailer. Looks like we’ve got another mega-hit on our hands.

Consider this an open thread for your reaction to the latest Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End Trailer. Oh Yeah, check out Yahoo Movies for an exclusive clip of Captain Jack and Barabosa negotiating over who gets to captain the Black Pearl.

  1. I worry it may suffer from a common problem among sequels: the needless escalation of scale, in place of a quality story. I mean, it’ll be a blast to watch, no doubt, but I’ve no idea how they’ll get a cohesive, sensible narrative out of it.

  2. First, my confession. I forgot the trailer was premiering last night until it came up. I was watching DwtS anyway.

What did I think? I can’t wait until May 25th! I think it will make up for my disappointment over movie 2. And I didn’t feel like it had to be super long. I think they can get that stuff into a movie about as long as the others without making it too disjointed.

    Hopefully I’m right.

  3. I was lucky enough to see the new trailer at the Ultimate Pirates Fan Event in Boston Sunday. Three times in a row, on the big screen! And yes, the visuals are very cool. The costumes are stunning, as we’ve seen in the stills. But somehow, I still came away from the event raving not about the POTC trailer, but rather about the Mega Bloks ad that they played a couple times in the pre-show. (Dead Man’s Blok is available here on YouTube:

I’m trying to keep my expectations low for AWE. I was disappointed in Dead Man’s Chest, and felt that its technical wizardry couldn’t make up for the lack of spontaneity and drive that were at the heart of Black Pearl.

Mind you, this isn’t going to stop me from being at At World’s End opening night. With plenty of family and friends. In costume. And maybe, just maybe, with a jar of dirt.

  4. Is it May 25th yet!!! The trailer looks so cool I’ve watched it 5 times and I think that POTC 3 will be amazing. Bring it on Captain Jack we can’t wait!
