Marvel Offers First Look at ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ at CinemaCon

Marvel Studios

Anthony Mackie returns as Sam Wilson in “Captain America: Brave New World,” and this week Marvel gave the first details and a look at the film.

The Details

This week, Disney closed down the theater owners’ convention CinemaCon, with a look at its upcoming films, including Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World.”

Mackie’s Sam Wilson is also Captain America, following the events of the Disney+ series “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

In the new movie, Wilson has a truce of sorts with Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, a role originated by the late William Hurt starting in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” and continuing all the way through to 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” where the character served as Secretary of State.

Only now, Ross is played by soon-to-be Disney Legend Harrison ford, and the character is now the newly elected President of the United States.

Spoiler Alert

In the CinemaCon sneak peek, Ross welcomes Sam to the White House, thanking him for his past heroic actions, and asking him to reform the Avengers.

But there’s a leak in Ross’ inner circle, and during a White House event, someone triggers sleeper super-soldiers who happen to be in the room to attack the President, including Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), who was introduced in “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

In trying to solve who is behind eveerything, Wilson is assisted by Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), who is not only a tech-savvy ex-Military “friend from work,” but another iteration of Falcon from the comics. Torres was also introduced in “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”

The tone of movie is said to be similar to “Winter Soldier,” in that it’s more of a gritty espionage story that happens to have superheroes.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige called the film “a grounded political thriller” at cinemaCon.

And while Sebastian Stan is not reprising his role of Bucky Barnes for this film – he’ll next be seen in 2025’s “Thunderbolts*” – the movie does has several other familiar faces from past Marvel movies.

From “The Incredible Hulk,” Liv Tyler is back playing Ross’ daughter, Betty, while Tim Blake Nelson reprises Samuel Sterns, a.k.a. the Leader, who was last seen being taken into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody after Banner’s blood caused him to mutate.

When We’ll See It

“Captain America: Brave New World” will be released in theaters February 14, 2025.

Julius Onah is directing the film from a script by Malcolm Spellman, who produced “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,”

If you want to prep for the film, I would suggest watching “The Incredible Hulk” and “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” on Disney+, and you should get to know the majority of the characters in the new film.
