The Unusuals on ABC: Series Premiere

The Unusuals where the most unusual police cases are unraveled in a quirky thriller format debuted on ABC last night. The show follows the Second Squad detective unit of the NYPD where everyone has a secret. Sergeant Harvey Brown promotes Detective Casey Shraeger, played by Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia), from vice to his homicide squad ostensibly to root out corruption on his team. But the story has many more twists and turns than just that.

Det. Shraeger is partnered with Det. Jason Walsh, played by Jeremy Renner, whose partner was just found murdered in a public park. Together they uncover a few surprises about others on the squad and investigate the murder of Det. Walsh’s partner.

There are moments of levity, provided mainly by the full of himself Det. Alvarez, who sees himself on the fast track to politics, and moments of terror as detectives find themselves face to face with death at the end of a shotgun or subway train.

I think Disney/ABC has a hit here. The show is just quirky and humorous enough to be unique, but the emotions and mysteries are accessible enough that anyone can follow them. Plus, they’ve cast a lot talented actors that will help carry the show.

Learn more at the official website or watch the ‘starter kit’ below the cut. Hopefully Disney will upload the episode to the website so you can watch it online if you missed it last night.

Second Squad. Nothing is what you think it is.

I’m looking for a blogger to do episode reviews/recaps of The Unusuals for The Disney Blog. Drop me a line with a link to your blog if you’re interested.

1963 Disneyland Aerial Photo

Disney News and Links: Where’s George Edition

Time to close a bunch of open tabs again and pass along some of the latest Disney news and links.

Is an IMAX Theater coming to Downtown Disney’s Pleasure Island 24 movie multiplex? According to the AMC website there is. Click on the ‘coming soon’ button at the bottom of this page. Alas, the date is TBD. The current thought is that it would either be expanded into the parking lot or into the space of the Virgin Megastore that’s closing soon. Of course an Apple Store and ESPN Zone have also been rumored for that space.

It’s not Halloween, but FoxxFur has the spooky tale of George, the ghost who inhabits the Magic Kingdom’s Pirates Of The Caribbean Attraction.

Six Flags isn’t the only theme park company facing debt restructuring issues right now. The Orlando Sentinel has the details on Universal Orlando’s problems. They’re looking at having to pay down $1.5 billion if they can’t get everything in line. That could mean in park cutbacks or even being forced to sell some properties.

Iron Chef Cat Cora, who will soon be opening a new restaurant at Walt Disney World, welcomed a new baby to the family last week. Cat’s wife, Jennifer, gave birth to a son. Cat is also pregnant and expecting this July.

Time to add another band to the banned list from Disneyland’s Downtown Disney House of Blues. The hardcore heavy metal band Daath was kicked for inappropriate content, no chance of appeal. I think Disney’s actually more concerned with keeping the peace at its open air mall than inappropriate content on stage.

A couple of Disney blogs to add to your list if you haven’t already. DisneyShawn smartly reveals the details and backstory behind Disney World’s theme parks. Meanwhile TouringPlans.com, the website of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, has started a blog as well.

Finally, I’d like to introduce you to the Disney Fan Review video podcast. It’s a new series that looks at the creative efforts of Disney fans across youtube. Sort of like a TV station for Disney fans. I’ve embedded one of his recent episodes below the cut:

Lilo & Stitch: Big Wave Edition

The new Big Wave Edition DVD of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch captures an ocean’s wave of fun and adventure in one the most overlooked gems on the crowded beach of animated films. The two-disc set is Jam-packed with games and awesome bonus features that take viewers behind the scenes of the movie.

The wildly original story features an independent little girl named Lilo and her adopted alien “puppy,” the mischievous Stitch, a runaway genetic experiment from a faraway planet. After crash landing on Earth, Stitch wreaks havoc on the Hawaiian Islands, but he also learns about loyalty, friendship and ‘ohana, the Hawaiian tradition of family.

The two-disc set includes pretty much all of the supplements from the previous release, and adds a few new ones. Disc 1 includes materials from the original release, including the excellent Director’s Commentary.

The most exciting new material is on the second disc. A two-hour making-of documentary covers every single aspects of the film’s creation. There are candid interviews that will please every animation fan. Plus there are new deleted and alternate scenes, including the original ending.
