According to writer/director Patty Jenkins the previously announced “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” film is still in the works after all.

The Details

The project, which centers on fighter pilots in the “Star Wars” universe, was first announced at the end of 2020 and was put on the calendar for a December 2023 theatrical release.

By September 2022, however, Disney had pulled the title from its release schedule, and many industry news websites reported last May that “Rogue Squadron” was no longer in active development at Lucasfilm.

In addition to her “Star Wars” film, Jenkins was still contracted to write and film the sequel “Wonder Woman 3” for DC and Warner Bros. However, when new co-Chairs of DC Films, James Gunn and Peter Safran, took over, they decided to cancel the film, and it appeared Jenkins wasn’t working on either film.

However, in a new interview on the “Talking Pictures” podcast for Turner Classic Movies (TCM), Jenkins announced that she is now once again in development on the script for “Rogue Squadron” following the dissolution of her planned “Wonder Woman 3” film.

“When I left ‘Star Wars’ to do ‘Wonder Woman 3,’ and I started working on that, we talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to “Star Wars” after “Wonder Woman 3,”‘ so we started a deal for that to happen,” Jenkins said.

“When ‘Wonder Woman 3’ then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like ‘Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.’ We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of ‘Star Wars.’ So we will see what happens there. Who knows.”

What’s Next?

Lucasfilm has not officially confirmed “Rogue Squadron” is still a go with Jenkins. If it is, it would have to be added to Lucasfilm’s already “Star Wars” film-heavy schedule.

Currently, the studio is working on the recently announced “The Mandalorian and Grogu” feature film based on the Disney+ series and directed by Jon Favreau, along with three more films by directors Dave Filoni, James Mangold, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that were announced at “Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023.”
