Marvel Animation has released a trailer for its upcoming “X-Men ’97” series that will debut on Disney+ in March 2024, and here’s what you need to know about the show.

The Details

The series was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, and it revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their powerful gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

The voice cast includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.

Beau DeMayo serves as head writer; episodes are directed by Jake Castorena, Chase Conley and Emi Yonemura. Featuring music by The Newton Brothers, the series is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and DeMayo.

“X-Men ’97” features 10 episodes and begins streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

The Backstory

“X-Men ’97” is a revival of the classic ’90s cartoon, “X-Men: The Animated Series,” which ran from 1992-1997. It was produced by Saban Entertainment and ran on the Fox network as part of its “Fox For Kids” programming.

Rather than be a totally new storyline, “X-Men ’97” is more like a continuation of the original, picking up after the 1997 series finale, “Graduation Day,” in which Prof. Charles Xavier dies. Even the animation style is similar.

But it’s ok if you haven’t seen the original, as the story will still be easy to follow. If you do want to catch up, however, all five seasons are available to stream on Disney+.

The Trailer

The first trailer for the “X-Men ’97” series shows X-Men members Cyclops, Wolverine, Morph, Rogue, Beast, Gambit, Jubilee, Bishop and more at Professor X’s bedside, rewatching the end of “Graduation Day,” before segueing into the aftermath of the team picking up the pieces without him.

“We have to say vigilant, the professor entrusted us with his dream,” Cyclops says to his team as images flash of anti-mutant protests, giant robots, and more.

New Poster

Along with the trailer, Marvel Animation released a teaser poster showing the episodes as VHS tapes on a shelf featuring the show’s logo:
