Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ series “Secret Invasion” will get a short run on Hulu starting Friday, July 21, 2023.
The Details
The first three episodes of the series – “Resurrection,” “Promises” and “Betrayed” – will be available for Hulu subscribers to stream through Thursday, August 17, 2023.
The remaining three episodes, including the finale which will air on Wednesday, July 26, will remain viewable only for Disney+ subscribers.
It’s an attempt to build subscribers, who Disney hopes will add Disney+ to their Hulu bundle, if they don’t otherwise have it.
It’s also a way for Hulu to have new content for the summer, especially with the current SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes pushing the start of any new projects.
The Series
“Secret Invasion” is a limited six episode series set in the current day era of the MCU.
In it, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls led by Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who are quietly installing double agents into positions of power around the world.
Fury joins his friends and allies, including Everett Ross (Martin Freeman), Maria Hill (Cobie Sumlders), James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle), and Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth, in a race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion, and save humanity.
“Secret Invasion” also stars MCU newcomers Emilia Clarke as Talos’ daughter G’iah, and Olivia Colman as MI6 agent Sonya Falsworth, who has history with Fury, along with Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, and Katie Finneran.
The series draws its inspiration from a 2008 Marvel Comics storyline of the same name written by Brian Michael Bendis, which crossed over into other superhero storylines.
Executive producer Jonathan Schwartz says the show also takes its cues from the Cold War espionage thrillers of John le Carré, as well as from some contemporary TV shows like “Homeland” and “The Americans.”
Jonathan Schwartz has likened the Secret Invasion series to John le Carré’s classic Cold War espionage thrillers and said he was inspired by Joe Weisberg’s The Americans and Alex Gansa’s and Howard Gordon’s Homeland. Sounds a great combo! Secret Invasion was written by Kyle Bradstreet and is intended to be the ninth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. It follows Nick Fury and his allies, who attempt to thwart a Skrull invasion of Earth.
If you like Secret Invasion, maybe try Bill Fairclough’s spy novel Beyond Enkription. This thriller is like nothing we have ever come across before which is why if you like Secret Invasion you’ll like this and vice versa. Indeed, we wonder what The Burlington Files would have been like if David Cornwell aka John le Carré had collaborated with Bill Fairclough. They did consider it and even though they didn’t collaborate, Beyond Enkription is still described as “up there with My Silent War by Kim Philby and No Other Choice by George Blake”.
