“Shrunk,” a sequel to the popular “Honey, I Shrunk The Kids” film series, was first announced in 2020, but nothing much has been heard about it until Disney Legend Josh Gad posted an update to his social media this week.
The Update
Gad, who was set to star in “Shrunk,” posted the following to Twitter, along with mock-up of a movie poster for the film:
“A lot of u ask me what’s going on with this film. Truth is, we were inches from starting and then COVID hit, inches from starting again & then my schedule exploded with conflicts, inches from starting again & budget got the best of us. If you want it, let your local @disney know.“
So in other words, unless Disney thinks there’s a huge demand for “Shrunk,” it’s probably not going to happen at this point.
After appearing in the Hulu series, “History of the World Pt 2,” as the voice of a dog in the soon-to-be released adult-orientated dog film “Strays,” and as a honorary “Jungle Cruise” skipper, Gad will next be returning to his Broadway roots in “Gutenberg The Musical.”
About the Film
In “Shrunk,” Gad was set to co-star as the adult version of Nick Szalinski, the son of Ron Moranis’ Wayne Szalinski. Moranis was also mentioned as returning to his role.
Also returning to the franchise was Joe Johnston, who directed the first installment, with David Hoberman producing and Todd Rosenberg penning the script.
“Shrunk” would have served as a continuation of the original franchise, which included 1989’s “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” 1992 sequel “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid” and 1997’s straight-to-DVD follow-up “Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.”
What are your thoughts? Is this a film you’d want to see? Bad enough to Tweet at Disney about? Let us know in the comments.
