Disney Announces Movie Release Date Changes Including Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar

Disney Announces Movie Release Date Changes Including Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar
.

Disney has shaken up nearly its entire upcoming movie release date calendar after this year, shuffling many titles including Marvel and Avatar films, along with adding new movies to the slate.

Some of these changes are a result of production delays and the ongoing WGA strike. Others are a result of being able to devote more time to the films.

Newly Added

Among the new movies added, the live-action “Moana” has been given a release date of June 27, 2025. We already know Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be reprising his role of Maui, as well as producing.

A new “Alien” movie, produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Fede Alvarez, has been picked to open on Aug. 16, 2024. This is separate from the “Alien” prequel series coming to FX.

And “The Amateur,” from 20th Century Studios, has been given the release date of November 8, 2024 (which previously was given to “Deadpool 3″…see below). Directed by James Hawes, the film follows a CIA cryptographer (Rami Malek) whose wife is killed in a London terrorist attack, and demands his bosses go after them. When it becomes clear they won’t act due to conflicting internal priorities, he blackmails the agency into training him and letting him go after them himself.

There are also a few spaces reserved for untitled films that will be announced at a later date.

An “Untitled Disney” film is now dated for September 6, 2024. and three others have shifted to March 21, 2025; August 8, 2025; and November 7, 2025.

Possible titles include a live-action “Lilo and Stitch,” and a live-action “Bambi.”

Star Wars

There are two “Star Wars” films on the revised schedule.

One movie has been pushed from Dec. 19, 2025, to May 22, 2026. Another untitled “Star Wars” movie will debuting later that year on December 18, 2026.

Most likely these will be two of the three films announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023 a few months ago, though it’s not known which films will be on which dates.

Marvel

Just about the entire 2024 and later schedule for Marvel’s Phase 5 and 6 films, which were first revealed during San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, have been shifted.

Hope you penciled in these movie release dates on your calendar, because there are a lot of changes.

Avatar

All of the remaining three “Avatar” sequels have had their release dates pushed:

  • Avatar 3 will now release December 19, 2025
  • Avatar 4 will now release December 29, 2029
  • Avatar 5 will now release December 19, 2031

This means the fifth “Avatar” movie won’t come out until 22 years after the original 2009 blockbuster.

The reasons given are that the space between the sequels will allow the post-production and visual effects department to continue expanding, developing and refining the different ecosystems across the vast world of Pandora.

“Avatar” producer Jon Landau posted this response to Twitter regarding the date changes:

“Each ‘Avatar’ film is an exciting but epic undertaking that takes time to bring to the quality level we as filmmakers strive for and audiences have come to expect. The team is hard at work and can’t wait to bring audiences back to Pandora in December 2025.”
