Actor Ray Stevenson Passes at 58

Actor Ray Stevenson, who has appeared in various Disney, Marvel and Star Wars projects, has passed away just short of his 59th birthday on May 21, 2023, in Italy, from currently unknown causes.


His Early Life

Born George Raymond Stevenson on May 25, 1964, in Lisburn, Ireland, he moved with his family to England when he was eight.

He caught the acting bug as a teenager and he later attended the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, graduating at the age of 29.

Four years later, he made his film debut in 1998’s “The Theory of Flight,” and Stevenson had his first leading role in a film in the Scottish horror picture Outpost (2008).


His Disney Roles

In 2004, Stevenson appeared as as Dagonet, a knight of the round table who sacrifices his life for his comrades, in the Touchstone film, “King Arthur,” which starred Clive Owen and Keira Knightly.

Four years later he starred as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Marvel’s “Punisher: War Zone” (prior to Disney’s acquisition of Marvel).

He went on to co-star as Volstagg, one of Thor’s most trusted friends, in the 2011 Marvel film “Thor,” and its sequels 2013 “Thor: The Dark World,” and 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok.”

Stevenson has also played two characters in the “Star Wars” universe.

He provided the voice of Gar Saxon in the animated series “Star Wars Rebels” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.”

He had also recently finished filming the role of a lightsaber-wielding Sith Lord adversary named Baylan Skoll in the upcoming “Ahsoka,” which will air in August 2023.

Also of note, he appeared in the international espionage/cop dramedy series “Reef Break,” which aired in 2019 on ABC in the U.S.

Other Projects

Other films he has appeared in include the “Divergent” series, “The Transporter: Refueled,” and the Oscar-winning 2022 film “RRR.”

He also has had lead roles in series such as HBO’s “Rome,” Showtime’s “Dexter,” Starz’s “Black Sails,” and the History Channel’s “Vikings.”
